Hi All,
This is my first post here but I've been browsing for a few months. One of our two Greyhounds, Kasey was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. She had a tumor on her right front leg just below the shoulder. After seeing an awesome Oncology organization outside of Boston (NEVOG) I began searching for a surgeon to perform the surgery that had Greyhound experience, I had no doubt Kasey wanted to fight this and I was in her corner. After several "interviews" someone from the Ohio State University Greyhound Wellness Program gave me the name of a surgeon with over 60 Greyhound amputations under her belt. I met with her and she was awesome...plus all that experience.
She did such an awesome job on the surgery. As you have all experienced the first two weeks were brutal. Kasey would wimper, she'd try to get up and had trouble keeping her balance, probably due to being heavily drugged. Then she started eating again, became more mobile and cried/whimpered a lot less. Then about six weeks ago she started getting excited again at the sound of a leash and I started taking her on short walks on our property. Then in the last four weeks she began to run everywhere, I mean really run that I was holding her back when I was running at full speed. She now plays with toys, eats like a piggy and is loving life.
She has undergone two of her four chemo treatments. Fortunately, she only skips breakfast of the day following a treatment and no other symptoms. She does however take quite a hit, white blood cell count wise the week following chemo and take three to four more weeks to recover. As a result she is only able to have chemo every 4 - 5 weeks.
This site and forum are awesome and the information is amazing. It has also been handy to prepare one for what is to come post surgery which was a very scary time. For others looking for Greyhound specific info don't hesitate to look up the Ohio State Greyhound Wellness Program. They gave me so much info on pre surgery prep, post surgery drugs and information and they provided me free of charge Kasey's four chemo treatments. Here is the URL: https://greyhou.....d.osu.edu/
Additionally, here is a video I made of Kasey playing with out other Greyhound, Barrett. I uploaded it to Youtube so my parents in Canada could see it. The music is cool so turn up the volume

Great story and update. Thanks for the help for future greyhounds. She looks beautiful....maybe even a little sexy?! I totally got the humor there and it made me smile. Great video. Keep up the fight Kasey!!!
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Hi Karen and thanks for the welcome. I look forward to both gaining extra knowledge here and sharing what I know and have read about to help others going through this terrible time.

Ha! Ha! I'm glad you got the humour. If you knew Kasey you'd know she is a little diva-ish so the song was appropriate. Glad you also enjoyed the vid.
Kasey will not give in, she's a little scrapper. She broke her leg after three years of racing and a lot of winning. Fortunately for her, she was a good racer so they kept her (many are put down) and she had a litter of puppies before they retired her. She was then adopted but returned because she growled at one of the new owners when she was in her bed at night. We then fostered her to help our other Greys seperation anxiety. We fell in love with her and adopted her three weeks later. Initially, she growled at us as well, only at night when in her bed. She took no time to settle in and after three months she's not growled at anyone since. I can now go and kiss her good night and I get a lick. I think she just needed to settle in. She is awesome. I call her my little piece of heaven on earth

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Hey Kasey and family, welcome! Thank you for taking time to share your inspawrational story with us. Every story helps others as they embark on their own Tripawd journey.
Your people sure did a lot of great research to get you the best care. And yep, we know about OSU's program. In fact my people just spoke at the Greyhounds Rock Conference in Virginia, which benefited the research there. If you don't mind, be sure to pass along info for all of the good doctors you meet up with in our Veterinary Referrals Topic.
We're glad you're here and look forward to more posts from you!
