We have a beautiful 6-year old golden retriever named Duke who is already a tripawd, having lost his right rear leg as the result of being hit by a car. He came to us as a foster than adoptee and I love him to death. Today when I came home my dog walker left a note that sometime between her noon visit and late afternoon visit that Duke seemed to have injured his front left leg and would not walk on it. We think perhaps he might have jumped off the couch and landed wrong, or been rough housing with our other golden, Connor. He did walk gingerly over to his food bowl for dinner and on his vets advise I gave him some Rimadyl that we keep on hand. For the past several hours I've kept the boys quiet and they've been sleeping. My vet said that if he isn't quite improved by morning to bring him in for X-rays.

Having lost two goldens to cancer and with Duke already being a tripawd I'm so scared to death that it could be something worse going with Duke. I know it's early and perhaps irrational, but I needed a place to come where I know people will understand. I can't even begin to think of how to take care of a doggie with only two legs, one front and one rear, one left and one right. I'll do anything, but right now I've worked myself into a worry fit.

Hopefully it's just a sprain or pull and I'm overreacting.

So hello and welcome. Thanks for joining us, your future posts won't need approval. So sorry to hear about Duke, but hang in there, this could be a very simple sprain of some sort that just needs some R&R to heal. We see that here a LOT and I know how easy it is to think the worst (an injured remaining limb is every Tripawd parent's worst nightmare!), but try not to make any guesses or you'll never sleep. You're a great parent and super conscientious about his health, hang in there OK? And do tell us more, we'd love to know your pack's story. And pictures too! Lots of pictures!

Oh heah....we understand working one's self into a "orry fit" all to well....and then the upgrade to over-reacting! Yep! You've come to the right place!

Sorry to hear about the loss of your other two dogs...sooooo hard. When you can, we would love to hear more about them.

I know it's ridiculous to tell you n ot to worry....but really....I don't think you have a thing to worry about at all! To go from being fine to not wanting to walk on it in a matter of hours really seems to indicate some sort of "injury" that happened very quickly...like jumping off the sofa and landing wrong...or rough housing. And it may not show much improvement by tomorrow anyway, so don't panic.

This kind of thing does happen with tripawds....they just don't realize that jumping off thing may not be a good idea! And Goldens just think they are puppies no matter how old they are!

I love "failed fosters"!!! You are a very kind soul.....thank you for giving Duke such a loving forever home!

PLEASE KEEP US POSTED! Would love to see pics and hear more about Duke too!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

You're not over reacting at all.... that's my job on here.  Right Jerry and Sally!

Deep breath and just give it some time continue to make the pups rest and hopefully he will be back to normal.

Saying prayers for a speedy tri-pawd recovery.  Tell Duke no rough housing when Mums away!

Hugs,

Tracy and Bailey Girl

Duke seems a little more mobile this morning, but certainly not his usual rambunctious self. It worries me that he seems so depressed. Anyway, I'm taking him to the vet hospital for an exam and x-rays to see what's going on. The pain seems to be in his shoulder, so I'm still hoping it's a sprain. I will report back.

Please let us know how Duke makes out. Yep, it is pretty hard not to worry. I have threatened to wrap Daryl's remaining front leg in bubble wrap. Glad to hear he is walking a bit better today. The fear of something happening to our pups who are already a leg short is a common one. When I get myself worked up, I just go to the website where I found Daryl. they have a bunch of active, happy pups on wheels. Thinking of you, Lori and Ty

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Hi everyone. We just got back from the vet hospital. Of course, when we got there Duke was his usual, barky, jumpy, happy self - he LOVES it there. He got a full exam by his vet and then the oath department went over him with a fine tooth comb. The consensus is that Duke must have somehow splayed out his front legs (spread eagle) and strained muscles in both shoulders. They didn't even see a reason to do x-rays. So, given his improved physical presence and no signs of permanent injury they prescribed rest and Rimadyl, and have him start on a daily regimen of Glucosamine-Chondroitin.

So, I indeed overreacted but I feel SO much better now. Seeing Duke smile and wag his tail really makes me so happy. Thanks to everyone here for chiming in with words of support and help. It meant more than I can say. Because Duke is a tripawd boy I have now found a place to learn, interact and find ways of being a better parent for him.

THANK YOU!!!!!!

Ohhhh this is GREAT! I mean ouch for poor Duke but otherwise what a relief! Thanks for letting us know, I've been thinking about you guys.

You didn't over-react, you were being an observant dad. What a lucky dog to have you there for him. By the way, do check out our e-book, Loving Lilfe on Three Legs and you also might want to consider enrolling in Dr. Gross' online Tripawds conditioning course that takes place in January. Lots of good stuff to keep your boy healthy and strong!

We're so glad you found us! Welcome!

Great update on Duke.  Glad to hear it was nothing major.  Lots of rest and he will be back to good sooner than you think
