What a gorgeous boy Drake is!  And how awesome you are for adopting him!  I'm so sorry you are on this roller coaster. We'll keep paws, fingers, and eyes crossed hoping for good - or at least easy to live with news.  If you do decide to amputate I imagine he'll do very well.  Best of luck.  Please let us know how things are progressing.

This is a very  nonjudgmental group.  If you decide not to amputate we'll totally understand.  If you decide to amputate we'll support you as much as we can.

You are not a bad person.  It is a difficult decision. Such a young dog who thought his life was turning around. So terribly sad.

Have you been speaking with a veterinary oncologist? Is the cancer in his lungs (I wasn't clear from your posting)?  How much cancer is there? Do you know how many spots and what sizes they are? There are options such as radiation and metronomic chemo.  They are only short term but if the cancer is already in his lungs they maybe an alternative to amputation and give him some good quality of life for his remaining days. Quality is what counts. If he can be showered with love for his remaining days, no matter how short, then he will leave this world a very happy and contented dog.

Putting the money aside, you need to weigh up the trauma of putting your dog through major surgery with the amount of quality time he will get.  For my dog, she didn't have cancer in her lungs prior to the surgery so I went ahead (the specialist had cautioned that if there was cancer in the lungs it may not be worth it).  We are now 7  months down the track and the cancer is showing up in her lungs.  For us those 7 months of extra time were worth it and she has been very happy. We are hoping to get a few more months yet before we say goodbye.

Good luck. It really is an insidious disease and something no beautiful dog should have to endure.

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/

Drake is SUCH a lovely dog!!! You are both very lucky to have found and adopted each other. You sound like you have a great understanding of "living dog" (in the moment), that puts you at an advantage for dealing with whatever the diagnosis finally is. Keeping our paws and fingers crossed.
Laura, Kali and Angel Tai
P.S. I hope you have an endless supply of shoes for Drake to tote about the house big-grin

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.

Oh I am so relieved that Drake shows no signs of cancer in his lungs!!! Yay!! That is wonderful news!! Drake was the last thing I thought about last night before I went to sleep while saying my prayers. I will continue to pray for him and for you to have the strength to get through this. Sounds like you are doing really good so far and with the support of Tripawds I know you will be great at helping Drake deal with his diagnosis. Hoping for the very best for Drake. He is a very handsome boy!!

Sorry I'm late to welcoming you and Drake to the site. Sorry you had to find us here, but - as I'm sure you've probbably already seen - you won't be sorry you joined the site. Lots of helpful knowledgeable folks here.

I also had a rescue dog that got OSA very young - but good grief - on day one for him to start limping!! For us, Abby started limping after we had her 10 months. Abby did amazingly on 3 legs, as young pups tend to do. She lived an amazing fun filled, wouldn't trade it for anything 15 months before we lost her.

I hope that you will have LOTS of wonderful time ahead with Drake. Keep us posted on what you decide to do. I know this is all scary and overwhelming, but there can still be a lot of good times and loving ahead.

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I wanted to say how sorry I am that you have received this devastating news, but I also wanted to say how relieved I am that his lungs are clear-- that is fantastic news!  Hoping that you continue to receive good news today.  Drake is absolutely gorgeous, and I, too, hope you enjoy many years with your new boy.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

I am so sorry about your dog!  I have a four year old St. Bernard who just had her leg amputated to a bone tumor!  We were torn between putting her to sleep, and amputatin & chemo.  She showed us she was not ready to go.  She still has so much life in her!  We had the vet screen her lungs before the surgery, and she showed no signs of cancer there.  She is at home, and recovering.  I think we made a great decision.  We also considered her age.  She is only four!  Good luck on your decision!

I just want to say to everyone that your dogs are lucky to have you. I have almost come to tears reading some of these topics and responses these past few days. You are all heros to me, and our dogs are heros as well. Going through this has really changed my life. I know this is off topic not in response to the original poster, but I just had to say it because it was heavy on my heart and I felt my heart overflowing while reading these posts. You all are beautiful people and I'm grateful for having found this site and knowing you, even if it was electronically.

I tend to get really emotional as it gets closer to time for Cadence's recheck X-rays. I just can't imagine losing her. I'm not ready for it if there should happen to be bad news. For me it sucks because I can't stop it, I can't control it, and that's the hardest part.

Drake's mom, you are in a great place here. I hope we can help you. I am sorry about this that it happened to you, and so soon, although there is never a good time for this diagnosis. But Drake doesn't have an expiration date stamped on him no matter what the statistics or prognosis. Whatever you decide we are here for you.

Cadence's Mom

Cadence Faye: Born 10/30/04, stepped into our hearts 12/23/2004. Rear leg tumor found 7/24/11 by mom and dad, Xray on 7/25/11, Osteosarcoma suspected 7/26/11, amputation 7/29/11, Carboplatin started 8/23. Met free so far!

Holy rollercoaster!!

Just came back from the specialist... he doesn't think it is cancer at all! laughing We may be one of the lucky ones that actually has a treatable bone infection that just looks like cancer, plus there is a prior injury that has caused some bone damage.

The specialist thinks it is probably due to some disease that Drake could have gotten in Greece.  Additionally, the specialist thinks there is dysplasia due to an old injury in the elbow - along with inflammation and the infection. Drake's getting some additional xrays and they are doing a draw of fluid from the joint to test for what it could be...

Not a perfect bill of health - and likely surgery for the elbow plus potential issues down the road as he ages - but what a 180 degree shift from where we were a few days ago. Geez.  I am glad we continued to look into this and didn't take the first vet's word at face value... we could have made a really bad mistake with him if we hadn't gotten another opinion!!!

Thank you to everyone for all your support and comments and suggestions - this is such a helpful, encouraging forum and an amazing group of people and their pups.

Wishing you all the best with your sweet doggies, however your story unfolds.  Take care everyone and have a safe and happy long weekend.

You know, this would kind of make sense in some ways. Infection is often exacerbated by stress. Drake just left his old life and started a new one. What's more stressful than that? It makes sense to me that his immunity might be all over the map right now. Regardless of what the real problem is, he could probably benefit from some short-term immunity boosters and probiotics or something.

Please keep us posted on what the final verdict is. This would be a great thing for Drake, if he has a treatable infection that allows him to keep his leg. Bone infections are nothing to sneeze at and can take a long time to heal, but it would be nice if he could  hang onto his spare for awhile. Good for you, pursuing another opinion and refusing to write off Drake. It would have been so easy for some people to do. If Drake could talk, he'd thank you. As it is, he will be grateful. Rescue dogs always are.

Wow! I have my paws crossed hoping that this is the case!

I don't want to alarm you or make you second guess this latest diagnosis, but in our experience many people who've been told their dog may have a bone infection, only end up facing osteosarcoma later on after months of waiting for treatments to work. Then again, we've never had a dog here from Greece so this could really be the case this time, I sure hope so!

See this video, Diagnosing Bone Cancer in Dogs

You may want to consider having a teaching hospital, like Ohio State University or Colorado State's Argus Center, look into this latest diagnosis just to be 100 percent sure. Both services are free (with donations gladly accepted).

But I do hope this is really the case and it's not cancer! Please let us know.
