Hi, I'm new here and could use some advise.  My 7 year old Greyhound started limping about 3 weeks ago, a visit to the vet  on Monday proved Osteosarcoma in the left Humourous. Chest x-rays show the lungs are clear and we've been assured she's a good candidate for amputation and chemo.  She is scheduled for surgery on Friday.  I'm still processing all of this, but confident this will give us more time with our girl.

This evening I noticed she has a lump on the left side of her neck, about the size of a grape.  I will be in touch with the vet in the morning, but in the meantime is there anyone here that can advise me about what's going on? I can't find anything about this cancer effecting lymph nodes.

The prescapular lymph node is near the front of the shoulder, and this is the one most likely to have mets, although it is rare.  Your vet can do a fine-needle aspirate to see if there are sarcoma cells in the node.  Even if the node is positive, she would still be a candidate for amputation.

Laura, thank you for joining us here. We are so sorry about your girl, we understand what a shock it is to hear that diagnosis. The best thing you can do right now is to think more Dog, and take things one day at a time. Try not to worry too much, as hard as that is.

Many thanks to our favoirte vet, Pam, who always has great advice here. We hope this helps you feel a little better before you know more from your vet.

Hang in there. All of us have paws crossed and hope that everything turns out just fine. Keep us posted OK?

Hi Laura:

Kim and Tikaani here, we live in Lawrence, so we are practically your neighbors!  Are you going to VSEC in Overland Park?  Dr. Dudley did Tika's amputation surgery (rear leg up to hip socket) and our oncologist is Dr. Heeb.  I can say that Dr. Dudley did a fantastic job on the amputation,  in fact, if I ever need surgery I'm putting on a fur coat and checking myself in to see him!

Tikaani just hit her five month ampuversary this month and is going strong!  She went through the initial chemo and now we have her on metronomic protocol which Dr. Heeb thinks just might be helping!

We have another greyhound tripawd from the KC area also, search out KCGrey!

I am so sorry for what you are going through,  read the 'two weeks of hell' posts.  Be strong for your baby.  Everybody is here rooting for you.

Thanks all, I spoke with the doc this morning, and he said he had not felt the lump with her exam on Monday. He will aspirate tomorrow, but agrees with what Pam said above.

Dan Hecker (Winding River Animal Clinic) will be doing the surgery, he has been the choice for ReGAP for many years. We love him and trust that he will help us make the right decisions. He has spent hours with me this week, and is the one that led me here!

I did read some on the metronomic protocol, so will definitely spend some more time researching.

Surgery is 8 tomorrow morning…..will be back in touch soon.

Thanks again,

Laura

I am always so happy to hear pawrents who have such great rapport with the vet.  We ended up with our second opinion vet being our all in one we were so comfortable with him.  He spent hours with us also, and never acted like he had another thing in the world to do except answer our questions.  He's awesome and we are blessed to have him watching over Trouble's care.

We'll be thinking of you and Greyt Girl as she undergoes surgery tomorrow.  Don't worry, she is in good hands.  And as long as you are here, you are in great hands too!  There are some awesome folks here who are more than willing to stand beside you all the way.

We'll be waiting for an update tomorrow.

"Greyt" news! The lump was a lipoma (sp?) Doc says nothing to worry about and has probably been there for awhile.

Surgery went well, nothing unexpected other than she's trying to get up and move already, so he's "aced" her to keep her down and quiet for the day.  Barring any problems this afternoon, we'll bring our baby home around 6 tonight.

Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts, now we'll gear up for recovery!
