VSEC just called to tell me the histopathology report has come back....

There was NO osteo in Calamity's million dollar leg!!!!

This is the best news ever & I am off to the grocery to get Twinkies for all!!!
(for those of you that are gasping....Twinkies are used in a lot of racing kennels as a special treat, usually a winning race and they all seem to remember this sweet treat)

I'm just thrilled!

Good news!  Now you don't have to worry about chemo.  That was worth the wait.

Thanks everyone!

I got the report today and here is what it says:

Microscopic Description:
Multiple sections of bone are examined on six sides. In many areas, the cortex and trabecular bone are thin. There is no evidence of inflammation on neoplasia in the sections. One of the sections contain some reactive bone and periosteal fibroplasia consistent with a callus.

Diagnosis:
Ostepenia

Comments:
I did not see any evidence of neoplasia in multiple sections of the bone. However, the bone was abnormally thin consistent with ostepenia.

I feel so much better about my decision to amputate now. From what i can understand those bones would have never really healed and been strong enough to support her. I wonder how much pain she must have been in since her splint came off at the end of June even with the daily pain medications.

Now she gets to live her life as a normal girl (her new normal, anyway) and we get to help people get through the rough first days after amputation.

We like our new role.

PS: jerry, you may want to change the title of this thread to Osteopenia Cool

I'm am so tickled you are glad you went ahead with the amputation.  You have saved Calamity from so much more pain down the road and she will love you for it, forever.  I'd say she deserves a round of "twinkies", or maybe even two rounds.  Heck, what a great day and Mom, Janie, you deserve a big hand for having the courage to make the decision when you still weren't quite sure what was going on with Calamity's leg.  All I knew is that she must have been in horrific pain with the osteomyelitis.  Congratulations to you and your family!

Janie & Calamity:

Congrats on your great news. I was also amazed when I found out that we are essentially 'neighbors'. Tika and family live in Lawrence and we will be working with VSEC for the amputation and chemotherapy if needed. Dr. Dudley will be our surgeon and our oncologist is Dr. Heeb.

We have confirmed chondrosarcoma in her rear leg and we'll be waiting for the biopsy results also after the amputation to see if there's a chance of osteosarcoma also.

I have been following your posts about going crazy on the wait, it's our turn now!

Cheers and happy holidays--Tika and mom (Kim)

Hi Kim!

Calamity has seen Dr. Dudley only once when she was going in for her daily dressing changes last December. He is way good! And Dr. Heeb is wonderful too! I have been associated with her when other greyhounds (not my own) have gotten treatments and the owners asked me to go for moral support.

You'll find the staff at VSEC to be wonderful & very caring & honest. They love pumpkin pies - LOL!!

If you have to spend time there, give me a shout! We'll meet for coffee or a snack. I'm not far from VSEC & would love to meet you.

Dear Kim,

Just an idea, but why don't you start a new thread on the "Tell Your Story" forum and make sure to put Tikaani's name in the title so it's easy for us to find.  I am absolutely certain that everyone on this site will want to follow Tika's progress and that's the best way to do it.

Good luck on everything and it sounds like Janie & Calamity have some great things to say about your surgeon.  That is exceptional news!

Love, Blazer, Kitty Kimber & Mom (Vicki)
