Hi guys.

Yeah, slept a little better last night but not great.  Wally started stirring around 4:30 and then started shivering.  Not sure if it was b/c he was cold or nerves, but I covered him with a blanket, turned up the heat, and comforted him until he stopped.  He was still a bit restless but finally got comfortable enough to get back to sleep.  Also, I have to give him some of his pain meds at 6, so was up again for that.

His appetite is down a bit, but he still ate this morning.  He hasn't peed yet but hasn't drank much water until ~half an hour ago so maybe he'll go next time I take him out.

He's also laying on his amputation side.  I would think that would be uncomfortable (or painful) for him, but he seems comfortable so guess he is.

Also, here's the selfy as promised:

Awwww...sweet picture.  Wally looks comfy all snuggling  up next to his Dad.

Keep an eye out to make sure he pees  tonight.  So it was last night that he peed and not since?  Can put some chicken broth in his water to help entice  him to drink.

You can ask your Vet about tweaking  the pain meds a bit.  Shivering and restlessness  could be a sign of pain.  All his hospital pain meds are getting out of his system now so his curre t meds may need some tweaking.  Depending on the time between doses, it may be that he needs his meds a little closer together.  Jist keep notes.  If he shows pain signs one or two hours before his next dose, the Vet may have you give them,  for example, every eight hours  instead of every twelve.

The fact that he is laying on his incision already does indicate that the incision itself isn't hurting too much.  My Happy Hannah took weeks before she was comfortable  on her surgery site.

Everything wou ds "normal" for this early in recovery.   Just keep an eye on peeing and drinking.  Check with the Vet on tweaking his pain meds.  Keep trying yummy foods.  He is eating some so that's good!

You and Wally are doing a good job!

Thanks for the smile making picture😊

Thanks Sally and good morning all,

Much to my relief he finally peed at 5 am this morning.  He's always seemed to hold it really well, so don't know if that's what he's doing or if it was him not drinking enough water.  He did seem to drink his normal amount of water in the afternoon yesterday but none this morning.  So maybe I'll try to put some chicken broth in his water with his breakfast, which he scarfed down no problem (edit - as I was typing he actually just got up and drank some water, so that's good).

He did start to get restless and shivered again a little before 5 this morning and after we went out, so maybe his evening pain meds are wearing off around that time.  It was different than the previous night, as last night it was what he does when he's scared from a thunderstorm of fireworks so could be anxiety too.  I give him Gabapentin every 8 hours (10pm, 6 am, and 2 pm) and Carprofen every 12 hours (10/10).  I can give him Trazodone every 8 hours as needed for anxiety or sedation.  I didn't give it to him last night since he was nice and comfortable and super sleepy in the evening (I did give it to him the night before).  I'll continue to monitor and give the vet a call if he does this again.

Other than that he seems to be doing really well.  When I was making up his breakfast this morning he actually got up from the bed and hopped over to the kitchen on his own!  I'm super encouraged by that.

Thanks again and have a great Sunday!

Awww love that photo! That made my day, I just had a chance to check in and am soooo happy to hear that he's making progress. YAY for peeing! Heee hee! Did you ever think you'd get so happy about that?!

You're doing a great job keeping an eye on his pain relief situation. Yeah it could be that the meds are wearing off a bit earlier than estimated, which is totally normal. Sounds like you have some room to adjust the schedule so you stay ahead of the pain (always the goal) but yeah let your vet know what's going on just in case. The shivering is often a pain signal as Sally mentioned.

I hope your day continues on the great path! Keep us posted and feel free to share more pics!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delayed update.  I was planning on updating last night but by the time I had a chance to sit down I was exhausted and had a busy day today.

Wally's doing really well.  Eating and drinking like normal, begging like crazy when either my friend who's been helping out or I am eating, and he's now getting up and hopping around by himself with not much effort.  I'm still following with the sling just in case and helping with the 2 steps from my back door to the back yard, but other than that he's bearing all of the weight.  He's also pretty much pooping and peeing as normal now (jerry - I never thought I'd be thrilled at helping my dog pee at 5 in the morning, lol).  Obviously I'm super encouraged with how well he's doing, but he's starting to become a challenge to keep his energy level down.

I did talk to the surgeon tech today and she said I can give Wally his pain meds early if he gets restless ~an hour before his scheduled meds time, so I'll do that beginning tomorrow if he wakes up restless again.  And speaking of pain meds, I removed his fentanyl patch today.  So we'll see how that impacts him.

We did have a near miss last night.  Wally got away from me and tried to hop up on the couch before I could catch him.  He didn't make it and landed with a yelp smiley5.  He seemed pretty shook up initially but seemed ok later in the night and was fine today, so looks like we got lucky.  Now I'm having to block my couch and love seat with dining room chairs and other furniture unless we're sitting on them.  It's a pain but only temporary and for the best.

Thanks again for the support.  Here's a pic of Wally resting on our floor bed.

Wally you crack me up, you couch surfer you! Too cute, I'll bet you're just itchin' to take back your space up there.

I'm so glad things are going well and your recovery is looking really smooth. YEAH! Good job talking to the vet and getting the medication fine tuned. An hour early seems totally reasonable.

As for his Fentanyl patch, technically that medication only lasts 3 days so it wore off a while ago. If he was going to get extra wonky without it, he would have already done so.

Rest easy, you're all doing great!

Hey guys.  Sorry I've been away for a couple days.  It's been a pretty busy week.  Wally's doing really well.  He's getting up and walking or hopping around completely by himself now.  I stay close in case he needs help, but for the most part he's got it.  I still help him up and down the 2 steps into the back yard, but other than that he's been getting around by himself.  He's eating like a horse, taking his meds (with cream cheese) no problem, and going regularly now (didn't poop today, but as long as he goes tomorrow I think he'll be fine).  It does where him out though as he's usually zonked out, dead to the world by ~8 PM.

His incision is looking good and pretty much all healed up as all redness and swelling are now gone.  I'm supposed to send a pic of the incision and a video of him walking to the surgeon on Tuesday.  Hopefully he'll drop a lot of the restrictions, and I can go back to sleeping in my bed.

Also, I received the Web Master Plus .  We did a rough fitting without the brush guard, so I'll fine tune and try it out tomorrow.  Also, the neck pillow type collar is working well.  I've been putting it on Wally anytime I've had to leave the house or the room for any length of time.  He doesn't like it much but doesn't freak out either like the plastic one.

Have a good night and thanks again for all of the advice and support!

WOOHOO! Doing the hoppy dance over here for the fantastic report about Wally!

What is the brand of inflatable cone you got for him? I'd love to share that in the Tripawds Gear blog . Nope he's not happy but I'll bet he agrees it's better than the plastic one.

And Wally, don't feel badly about pooping out at the end of the day. I'm pretty dead to the world by 8pm too! icon_lol

Hey guys!  Figured you'd really like the pic, lol.  I love Wally's "why are you leaving and what the hell is this around my neck?" face, lol!!

A question on the harness.  Is that something you can leave on throughout the day or just put on when you go for a walk, car ride, etc.?  I'm sure Wally will need my help going up and down the steps in my house, so I'll probably need to put it on for that.

Jerry - I went with the BENCMATE inflatable cone (see link below).  There's other brands that looked similar, Kong being one of them.  One thing that was nice about the BENCMATE is that you slide your dog's normal collar through some straps on the inside of it, which keeps your dog from removing it without having to go super tight with it.

Oh awesome, that's a nice collar, thank you for sharing!

Regarding the harness: our Jerry and Wyatt wore theirs all day long because we have stairs leading in and out of our home. And we've learned through the years that just when you think you won't need that handle to help your dog with some obstacle or slippery floor, you really do need it! Since they were both comfortable wearing their harnesses we just left them on all day and took them off at night. Just be sure to check for chafing.

I've seen that look before!  Pug boy Obie had limited eye sight and the regular cone caused him problems.  I used a donut cone when he was recovering from his two knee surgeries.  He didn't have to wear it all the time but he was much happier, relatively speaking, than when I put the regular cone on him.

As you can see in the pic Obie is wearing his webmaster harness .  He wore it all day long for each of his knee surgery recoveries/activity restriction periods which were 8 weeks each time.  He never had issues wearing it that long.

Elly only wears her harness when we are out of the house.  But in pre-pandemic times we traveled for Nose Work Trials so she would have it on for 8 to 12 hours at a time.

OMG Obie looks adorable there, lol  Thanks for sharing Karen!

Wally continues to get better everyday.  My friend John who was coming over to help out earlier in the week stopped by for a bit today and commented several times at how much better Wally is getting around than early in the week.  I can't wait until Tuesday for (hopefully) his restrictions to get lifted, and I can get back to sleeping in my bed lol.

Wally on the other hand is probably going to be none to happy about losing his comfy living room bed, lol.
