Hi, it's been a few months now that Tyson had his initial assessment. Things were looking up, he was given medication for pain, he seemed to be responding. The plan was to first thing diet!! He needs to lose weight. I switched him to low fat Nutro, he gets 1 and 1/2 cups in the morning, moistened with a little wet( less then 1/4 can) it's all measured and afternoon is one cup dry moistened with chicken broth and a cup of green beans, swt potato and carrots. He gets a piece of turkey to hide his morning and evening pills.. he is not losing any weight at all. I know his motion has decreased again and I can tell he is hurting again. He was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his remaining front leg. Everything has been closed because of covid-19 so we have been homebound. The doctor who assessed him also recommended treatment with an Assissi loop, has anybody else heard or tried it? I will take him for swim therapy as soon as things are open, but I need to help my boy now and just not sure what direction to go. I just watched the interview with Dr. Wendlend and I can relate to everything she was describing
Hi,
First thank you for the message you sent me regarding Brownie. It was nice to hear from you again.
The way Brownie lost weight was using the diet "Feed the Dog Starve the Cancer" Diet. I also cut back on store bought treats and starting dehydrating my own. When I did use van I only used about a teaspoon. I think 1/4 of can might be a little much and add a lot of calories, so I would definitely cut back on the can. I was told by my vet to feed the amount for what you want them to weigh, not what the weigh. I also learned on this site that one pound of dog weight is five lbs of human weight. So if Tyson is 2 lbs overweight that is 10 lbs in human
Hope this helps, and it is good to hear from you again. By the way, still have the ramp.
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!

Hey it's nice to hear from you. Can we get a Tyson photo? We need to give him a virtual smooch!
You are clearly trying your best to help him with the weight loss, and that is wonderful! It can be frustrating to not see it happening in normal times, much less now when everything is so upside down. You nailed it with your title for this post! 🙂
Have you consulted with your vet on what he is eating? If so, what did they say?
If your vet is not being helpful, then I would recommend getting a referral to a canine nutritionist. You'll need your vet to reach out to them but it's worth a consult. They can help you formulate a diet to suit his caloric needs. With Tripawds, it's less about the exercise (although it's still important) and more about what you put into a bowl. Here's a link you want to check out:

Oh as for the Assisi Loop, yes, quite a few people have tried it on their Tripawds, with mixed results. Here's an article we wrote about it:

It's not a cheap therapy and honestly if I had to choose between it and a nutrition consult, I would spend the money on the consult.

Thanks for the ideas, (shout out to Brownie1201), at the risk of sounding technology deficient.. How do I post a picture on here?? Usually I can figure it out but I'm not sure so I need help there!! He needs all those hugs!! I just spoke to the Rehab Vet and he said the first thing to do is get his pain under control. The osteoarthritis is worse in the elbow, can consider adaquan and highly recommends the swim therapy. We will discuss diet more at his visit and may possibly consider an elbow support. First though he wants to ease the pain, so limited movement, more meds and if possible help him with a harness. We are waiting for an appointment , he wants to consult with an orthotic about the support. I need to do more research on the food. I was so happy to get him to eat the veggies but really want a good quality food to go with it. So tell me how to post that picture and you will see what a handsome little chunky dude he is.. He is even wearing his Tripawds scarf that a certain sweet lady sent us!!
