What questions should I ask at first physical therapy session?

On Monday Cocoa has an appointment with the PT area at South Texas Veterinary Specialists. Here are some of the things I'd like to cover, is there anything else I should ask?

What should Cocoa weigh?

I feed her Nature's Variety, two cups/day. Does this need adjusting?

Can you show me strengthening exercises we can do at home?

What supplements should I add to her diet?

What type of exercise do you recommend?

When should I use heat/cold therapy?

I really just want an instructional session or two, so that I can work with Cocoa at home. Regular sessions are out of my budget right now.

Thanks so much, as always!

Sooz,

You have some excellent questions.  I want to remind you, once you have their answers in your hands, you will still want to research to determine if what they told you fits your situation.  I'm not implying they would steer you wrong, but not all the canned responses fit each dog. Be open and ready to adjust and adapt what you are told to maximize the results for Cocoa if necessary.

Oh good to hear you're going! Can't wait to hear how the visit goes.

A good therapy team will want to conduct an analysis of Cocoa's gait, her range of motion capability and how flexible and strong she is. I would ask them what their protocol for therapy. First should be pain relief, next should be increasing range of motion and last should be achieving strength. It's also impawtant to know what their goals in the rehab program would be once they analyze these things, then find out how their goals will fit in with your budget and lifestyle. They should definitely be able to give you homework assignments so that she doesn't have to go as often.

Hi Sooz,  If you have time after your appointment, I would love to hear what are the answers you received.  I've been doing some of the stretches I saw in videos here with my dog, but am eager to learn anything new that can make his life better.  (Admin, I'm not sure how to link to the stretching videos page...could you link this if you have the chance?)
