After months of PT, Dave did one jump and fractured his "good" front knee yesterday. Surgeon's assistant called and said repair will likely be $6,000-$7,000 and recovery very difficult due to him being tripawd. Does not know even a best case scenario for recovery yet. Am so sad for him and wondering what I could have done differently to make him stronger. Of course regret letting him be in a situation where he could jump, but it can be so difficult to always keep them on flat ground all the time.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue (break in the "good" leg after amputation) and know what the recovery does entail? I will speak to surgeon tomorrow, but am so worried about Dave's recovery, any advice would be welcome. Thanks so much!!
We didn't have a break to deal with, but Murphy did have a total hip replacement done in his remaining rear leg. He recovered from it well, but it definitely was a lot of work on our part...and on his.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
Oh no! I worry about that all the time with Murphy when he jumps off the furniture. I'm sorry you're going through this!

Thanks very much, good to know recovery can happen when the weight-bearing limb is damaged. Any suggestions or advice welcome! Thank you,
Anne
I am in the process of reloading Murphy's videos to YouTube. Somehow his channel went away and we lost all the postings. You can check out his story...without the videos...in the Beyond Cancer section here. It starts with Total Hip Replacement after Rear Leg Amputation. I hope to have videos ready soon.

Sorry to hear this. I think this is something we all fear. My kitty Mona, a front leg amputee, sometimes takes flying leaps off of my high bed and I cringe when she does it. We don't have total control over their lives that's for sure. I doubt you could have done anything different to prevent this from happening to Dave.
Have you considered using a cart/wheelchair for the recovery time? Here's some information: http://tripawds.....and-carts/
It's obvious Dave is well loved.

So sorry to hear about Dave. You can search all blogs here to find various articles about tripawds surviving subsequent leg injuries and surgeries. Here is just one well documented case:
