The MegaStar has sprained her carpus (and a rant)

So Meg appears to have sprained her carpus.  I thought she seemed uncomfortable a couple of days ago. Nothing specific, she just didn't seem to be moving quite naturally on her walk. So yesterday, I kept her pretty restricted and she seemed okay, but this morning she definitely wasn't okay. She looked hesitant about going downstairs, so I carried her, and then she stumbled twice on the way to the car. I thought I'd still take her to the wood, just to see how she was, but within about twenty yards she had fallen over twice, so I carried her back and brought her home.

Now the rant part... I called our rehab vet, who is excellent clinically, but not always the most sensitive human alive - the last time we saw her, she actually compared the 11 month nightmare I went through with Meg, which ultimately resulted in her amputation, with the problems she had getting her car fixed. Anyway, I rang her, and she suggested I take her to see a vet locally, just to get Meg checked over, rather than going straight to her, as she is a three-hour drive away. Our primary care vet is in central London, and we are currently in Norfolk, which is also about a three-hour drive, so I called a vet in the nearest town and booked her in to see them.

The vet gave her a thorough once over and said that she thinks she has sprained her carpus, and she also has considerable arthritis in her carpus, as well as in her elbow and her foot (which I knew), she prescribed strict rest, using her harness to take her weight when she walks and also added gabapentin to the metacam she is already on, just for a week or so. What got me though was just that she was so downbeat. She basically seemed to consider Meg a very sorry case indeed. She told me it was 'much worse' losing a front leg than a rear one. I'm like thanks well I'll bear that in mind next time, see if they can't lop a back one off (I mean, I didn't say that, but I felt like it... and for what it's worth I also don't believe this is true. They each present different challenges). and she didn't say anything nice about Meg at all, or anything remotely encouraging, and frankly it's hard to meet the Megastar and not say something nice. It would take an effort. Even the receptionist was downbeat. Said how sad it was Meg having just one front leg and I told her how well Meg did and how happy she was and she didn't look convinced at all. And to be honest it was just bloody awful.

So then afterwards I called in the supermarket to by us both some comfort food, and I actually started crying at the checkout, and the woman was just brilliant and with FAR more empathy than anyone at the wretched vets. And then the rehab vet phoned and I told her what happened and she is going to see Meg tomorrow – I expect she needs an oil change, or some new tyres or something (bitter laugh...)

Sorry for the rant (though I do feel better having written it). Thanks for reading ❤️

(((((Big Hug))))))) People just suck sometimes, don't they?? Don't let them get to you, sounds like the whole office needs a personality adjustment!!!  3 hours, sheesh, long drive. Only to be greeted by sad sacks that are clueless. You rant and rave all you want, I would be just as livid. It may even have been my last visit there, lol. Customer service... hello??? I just don't understand people today.  Maybe they need some tripawds information sent to them so they can get some fresh edumacation?? *smile, no that was NOT a typo, I am a smart a@@*  Yay for the comfort food, sometimes you just have to do it!  I hope you have a better day today heartheart

Oh poor Meg and poor you!  Sending tons of love, hugs and support!  Keep us posted on tomorrow's appointment.   I guess in the vet world it's the same as any other line of work there are some that should be doing what they do and some that have no business being in that line of work.  It's the latter that make it hard for us "common" people.  You probably have more knowledge about Meg's situation than that vet you saw.  😡  Sending healing thoughts and prayers that you can get this completely under control with rest and rehab for our Megastar!  Meg you take it easy now and listen to Mum!  Mums know best....always!  Wish we could bubble wrap ourselves so those types of comments and extreme lack of empathy could roll off us...but alas we can't.  But know all who know you and Meg and know what what you two are capable off have got your back!  ❤️❤️❤️❤️

NOBODY VETTER MESS WITH OUR MEG-A-STAR!!!   NOOOOBODY!!!!     THEY'LL HAVE THE WRATH OF THE ENTIRE TRIPAWD COMMUNITY CO.ING TO BEAT THEIR A*:-)!!!

Stress Release! I'm about to Whip Somebody's A**!…:

First of all, I'm glad Miss Meg didn't hear a word those uninformed, insensitive a**holes said!   Ya' just can't fix stupid!!!

We....We the informed....KNOW the challenges a tripawd faces, whether frtont legger or rear legger!  We've done our research and are very, very well informed!!   Perhaps the Vet and the Staff should do theirs...along with some snesitivity training!!  Like we have a CHOICE of which leg we "select" to chop off!   What idiots!!

I shudder to think about the cases who have been brought to their attention where an amputation would have been a "solution" for quality and possible quantity too.    I bet they discouraged anyone who brought it up! ' ESPECIALLY if it was a front legger!!!

MEG-A-STAR IS INE IF THEEE BEST TRIPAWD GOOD WILL AMBASSADORS IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE!!! 🙂 🙂   Anyone who meets her sees how blissfully happy she is!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂   Her joy knows no limits!!!   It really, really is limitless!!!

Oh, that's right, she's a front egger.  She shouldn't be happy.  She shouldn't be swimming.  She shouldn't be diving into the water like an Olympian Champion.  She shouldn't be chasing critters.  She shouldn't frolic on the beach.  She shouldn't be jumping on top of sheds (well, okay, maybe that's a no-no).  She shouldn't be MEG BEING MEG!!!!!!!      Well, it's damn good thing Meg-A-Star ignores stupid!!!!

No, Meg doesn't need an oil change....humans need a change of heart when it comes to our tripawds!!!!  Geez!!

As angry as this makes us all,I still found myself chuckling at your delightful wit Clare!! 🙂  And, of course, that pictures  of our BEAUTIFUL Meg...soooo happy...soooo content...just melts our hearts!

OH!  WAIT!!!  I forfrot!!  Front leggers aren't allowed to be content and happy!  My bad!

So glad you came here Clare!!   We love you and our Meg-A-Star, and the Elsie Pie too!! 🙂 🙂   We'll ALWAYS have your backs!

Lots and lots of @ove alwaysheart

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Thanks, Everyone. I knew we could count on our Tripawds family for understanding and support. Sally,, I played Meg your stress release video, and she did a little dance, despite the sprained carpus, and looked worryingly happy for such a pitiable creature. She just doesn't get it at all!

I hate it when people feel sorry for Meg. Sure, she's had some challenges to deal with, but frankly she is a VERY LUCKY DOG, arthritic, sprained carpus and all. I know it and I know she knows it too. And really it's so silly, when she leads such a full and stimulating life and when you think of all the four-legged dogs who don't, who are neglected or abused or even just misunderstood and not given what they need, and never able to be the dogs they truly are. There is SO much of that and I think that's a MUCH bigger problem than the loss of a leg. Who needs four anyway? Grrrrrrr! Time to watch the video again laughing

That's true. She was far more upset over the loss of her bloomers than she was over the loss of her leg. My girl's got her priorities straight. Love you Sally ❤️

Ok but seriously folks.....yes Clare you are SO right, whether rear leg or front leg, they each have their challenges. I think many rear-leg Tripawds get injured because people assume it's always harder on the front so they let rear-leggers go crazy and do whatever they want. This is a "yes, but" type of issue so you done good educating the clinic staff.

Now about Meg.....I'm sorry about the injury. This sucks. But it's common, and usually R&R takes care of it.

Do me a favor OK? Always remember that she is pawesome (and you too Elsie Pie!) you are pawesome, and you both WILL overcome this. We all know that you are exceptional in the care and attention you provide to her, so hopefully she will be back to her old self in no time at all. Hopefully you won't need to make that long trip to Miss Personality so we are all thinking pawsitive and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Clare, you do a great job looking out for the Megastar. You know her so well and have her priorities straight. It's kind of hard to fire the vet clinic. My sister recently fired her resident oncologist because she's a "Debbie Downer". We all need positivity and praise for what we can do and not to focus on what may be a challenge or what may be missing. Does Megastar dwell on trimmed bloomers? Nope.

I'm sure the rehab vet will help Meg once her oil is changed. laughing

Hugs to you and the pups,

Kerren and Tripawd Kitty Mona heartheart
