Tipper had dry needling for the first time - around 4:30 pm. Dr. Petty told me to expect up to 36 hours of pain - maybe additional pain - before improvement (and not to freak out).

I did finally get Tipper's pain meds down him - gabapentin, amantadine, and rimadyl (that was ugly).

Anyone know other relief for post-needling pain? Right now, he doesn't want me anywhere near him, and he's whining and pacing. 🙁

I tried a warm towel, but not sure it helped. ( I also tried heating up an old t-shirt in the mircowave and nearly burned the house down!)

I've read no cold, just heating pad. Any other ideas?

There are also some fireworks going off somewhere in the neighborhood, which could have a lot to do with his distress as well.

Sorry, no ideas for Tipper, but if you're going to warm something in the microwave, you have to have moisture in there, too.  Next time try putting a mug of water in with the t shirt.  Or try warming the shirt up in the drier instead.

Ah, yup! And I'm actually smarter than that. A few hours of pacing, panting, and whining wheedled away at my brain! Lol

You really are on a roller.coaster ride! From the blog.he was doing so.much better (relatively speaking!), and now...ugh! Dr Petty did.prepare you for a more painful 36 hrs after.the.acupuncture. Not that you can 0"prepare".to.see your pup hurting!

The fireworks could DEFW make.him.pant and be restless.and whiny though.

Curious...what did Dr Petty say about pursuing more chemo as a treatment? Has the Onco who originally suggested that gootten back.in town?

Hang in there! Sending healing energy and hoping for better days ahead!

Hugs!

We go back to ACIC next Wed.

We really didn't talk much about chemo. Although the onco was searching for sources of the pain when she found the two mets, Dr. Rogerson and Dr. Petty both feel pretty certain that the pain is not a direct result of the cancer. That's a whole separate issue.

We are a walking advertisement for why rehab is necessary. Neither my primary vet nor the doctors at ACIC responded much when I asked if we should seek Dr. Petty's rehab programming. I was too caufght up in the cost of treatment, the appointments, the follow-up CBC, the urgent trips back to our vet for the broken/torn paws...

Truth told, Tipper spent a lot of his recovery and treatment time on 2 paws, and by the time this pain got so extreme, both back paws had torn pads.

Dr. Petty's words were something like, "Well, you can see there's going to be a lot going on." Of course the myofacial pain was extreme with his muscles being used so differently - more so than your average gripawd. What surprised me was the advanced hip displasia. Tipper had some arthritis toward the bottom of his spine going in. I don't know if or when we've done hip X-rays before. The ball joints in his pelvis are just ragged. Ouchy ouch ouch.

Anyway, for now anyway, it would appear that the pain is structural and mostly muscular and separate from the cancer.

As far as the cancer treatment goes, I'm not even sure if I want another x-Ray next week. I'll read up on and ask about metronomics and consider something like that meant to slow the spread. I don't want to do anything that has to involve a bunch more X-rays and bloodwork, though. We'll work with Dr Petty on the pain. Otherwise, as few vet visits as possible from here on out. Tipper has had it. Hopefully, next week's acupuncture will feel so good that he'll enjoy the trips to Dr. Petty's. each time I take him to an appointment, he is more anxious and resistant. 🙁

I don't have hopes for miraculous survival time, though it seems that has happened here and there. I just want Tipper to be happy and pain free. Needles and x rays and stuffing more pills down him - that's not what Tippers love to do.

Canine Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Therapy Tips for Tripawds

Yes, ive found a lot of info on dry needling. I haven't gathered there's much to be done about the day and a half of pain that follows. It took a LONG time for meds to kick in and/or for him to calm down. Still sore today, but eating and "eliminating" have occurred. He didn't refuse his peanut butter and pill sandwich tonight. He's camped on the floor next to the couch right now, so I imagine I'll sleep out here on the couch again tonight.

Thanks for for all the links!!
