Lucy (Rottweiler) had her left hind leg amputated.  She is having difficulty with her right leg splaying and it needs support.  She does not have a stump on her amputated  leg and all the harness systems I have found require a stump.  Does anyone have a suggestion as Lucy now walks with her good leg out the the side putting pressure on her good hip and her back.   Thank you, Lori.

Hi Lori, thanks for posting and calling the Tripawds Helpline . I believe Sally gave you a call back?

How long ago was Lucy's amputation? I know this seems unrelated but did she see a canine rehabilitation therapist? The reason I ask is because the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit , and these experts can show you ways to help her get strong so that she has better mobility.

Meanwhile, as far as assisting her, you're right, it's tough to find anything for a rear legger that allows us to help them with mobility. In the short term you can help her with a Ginger Lead. Or you can make your own dog sling.

The best long-term solution we have found is the Custom Pet Support Suit. The other harness made by the same manufacturer, the Get-a-Grip, is nice but it's off-the-shelf and not tailor-made to a dog's measurements the way the suit is. The suit can also be left on all day.

Also, what are your floors like? Do you have traction so she doesn't slip around?

Hi Laurie....it B me....sally.  And Laurie has already done a good job keeping Lucy on a good weight!  And yes, also suggested seeing a Rehab Specialist and she has yoga mats down...she is such a good tripawd Mom....and she has four dogs total!!!

She also mentioned  treating a dog with tumors with ID6....asked her to share more about that here when she can.

Hugs to you and your pacck!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Here's a post just started by a member on harnesses.  Lots of good info should that be the route you end up going.  But I really think a Rehab app will be very informative too.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
