Hi, Bella is a little over one month post amputation. She is a 7 year old rough collie that was diagnosed with a very, very aggressive stage 3 fibrosarcoma. They did a full left rear leg amputation to be able to get clean margins. Aside from relatively normal pain/adjustment issues, she seemed to be doing very well. She was feeling really good and was starting to want to play again. She was weaned off of all pain meds except garbopentin (sp?). About four days ago she started acting anxious (panting, pacing) but was able to be calmed down. That night I caught her biting at her rear tarsal joint on the remaining back leg. When I looked at it, there were red spots. I could not tell if it was from the licking or biting. Two days ago, I took her back to the vet. He did a hands-on exam (no xrays) and said everything seemed normal but she may have a sore back leg from the adjustment or a fall but he did not feel any swelling or could not feel anything else wrong. She did have reaction/pain in the muscles in the middle of her back and on either side of the spine. (This was not new as it was the first found when we were trying to understand why she first started slightly limping in December.) We did laser treatment on that and are continuing with Previcox and ice treatments. Since going to the vet she seems to be getting worse. She is falling more and when she does she is refusing to get up on her own and only wants to lay there. She also does not seem to be as strong on her leg as she was before this started. She is also anxious repeatedly throughout the day. I think maybe the anxiousness is her not wanting to sit down on her own but being too tired to continue standing. Once I help (almost force) her to lay down and sit with her a minute petting her she calms down and sleeps deeply. Last night this scenario played out repeatedly through the night and all day today. She is also more hesitant to take the step onto the back porch and the one other step into the back yard. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to help brace her leg? Should I suspect something is wrong? Should I try to confine her so if she has hurt her leg, she has time to heal and not reinsure it repeatedly? Side note: We have another collie that is already lame in his back legs due to reaction to a drug that cause him to lose elasticity in his tendons and ligaments in his rear legs - so my house is already a maze of runners that are in almost every area of my house that has tile or wood floors. Bella does get off of the runners but they are available to her. She is an extreme "momma' girl" and literally wants to be within two feet of me regardless of where I am. Also, I do not know if this would contribute but she started chemo about one week ago. Aside from being a little sick to her stomach (controlled quickly with meds) she seemed to tolerate it well.
Hi and welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
Sounds like something is wrong to me, her regression is pretty big. If the vet found no structural issues then she could have a strain or sprain somewhere.
Did she fall somewhere, maybe on the stair? Since she has an existing back problem then hopping around on three certainly could be causing her more pain.
Is there a certified therapy vet near you? Sounds like Bella could really benefit from an evaluation and some specialized treatment. Here is a Link to Information on Why Rehabilitation Therapy is good for Tripawds. There is a link there that will let you search for a certified vet in your area.
Also- what chemo is she on? I can't remember the chemo for fibrosarcoma, but I know the chemo palladia can lead to weakness in the back and back legs.
I hope you can find a solution soon.

Yes, she has fallen a few times. Since this started, she has fallen more than she did the first days she was off her harness and on her own. She gets tense with the anxiety which makes her stiff and more prone to falling. Her oncologist actually runs a canine rehab facility. My other boy gets in the underwater treadmill 2 - 3 times per week there. I was happy if we had to go through this, we already have an oncologist that feels like family. I am going there later this morning and will also see what she thinks. I didn't know if this was a "normal sore thing" or if I need to keep pushing harder to get her more help. I feel as if I am not sure if things are real issues or I am being an overprotective (read paranoid) stay at home dog mom. My regular vet is an ortho specialist so I feel comfortable with his evaluation but still concerned.
I'm so sorry beautiful Bella is having a hard time. How wonderful to have to have an oncologist you trust to help you with these issues. Let's hope she can pinpoint Bella's problem and work towards fixing it. Please keep us posted on the visit today! Hugs to you and Bella! She so reminds me of my ❤️ Dog Jake who's been gone almost 5 years now. I still miss that wonderful boy! Love that collie temperament. My Riley is a tri-color collie. Such gentle giants they are.

Awww...sorry beautiful Bella...and she is so beautiful...is javing these issues.
You are NOT being overprotective at all! Something is causing this and, hopefully, the team you jave in place can fivure things out. It sounds like she was biting her leg because it hurts. It also seems like her back could definitely be causing her some pain too.
I'm certainly no vet, but I would have the team check her out thoroughly...back...neck...legs...etc. I would ask abojt pain meds too. Something is hurting her. I know you're very comfortable with all the vets, but sometimes a second opinion with a new set of eyes can do wonders.
Update after your appointment. Certainly if this is muscular, rest, pain meds and maybe anti-inflammatory will do the trick.
Give that beautiful girl some extra treats for us, okay?
Hugs!

Awww I'm sorry to hear Bella's having a difficult time, especially after what you've been through with your other pup. You're definitely not being overprotective, you're being a good advocate.
It does sound like you have great vet care, but I agree with Sally, a second opinion at a different practice can really put your mind at ease. What is your current vet's plan of action and time-frame for getting this diagnosed and resolved? If you aren't happy with their recommendations, definitely ask for another opinion at a different practice, a good vet won't be insulted by it.
Is she on anything else other than the Previcox? For now I would want something in addition to that, just until this is resolved.
Yes, keeping her in a small space in your home, in an ex-pen in the living room for example, will be helpful to healing. She will not like being able to follow you around but she'll have a better time healing up.
Keep us posted, we're hoping she starts to feel better soon.

I am currently consulting with both her primary vet (also an ortho specialist) as well as her oncologist (who also runs a pet rehab facility). Bella was taking the Previcox and the Gabapentin. After yesterday, she is back on tramadol, and alternating Xanax and Cannapet for the anxiety until we figure if the Cannapet will work as well. We figured her anxiety over all of it was making it worse. The meds are really helping with that part although she is still looking at me like I need to make it better. We are trying to keep her relatively quiet as possible over the weekend. Today was no worse/no better as far as leg weakness and falling. Oncologist believes the biting/licking may be a form of the phantom leg pain . It is believed the cancer started at the same joint on her amputated leg and probably where it was most painful although it spread quickly from there. They both are thinking the leg pain/weakness is probably from sprain/strain from a fall. If she isn't starting to improve by Monday, they are going to bring her back in for re-evaluation as soon as appointment can be made.
I know something isn't right but I am not sure how much time to give everything if she did sprain/strain something for it to heal before I start pushing. I keep worrying about misdiagnosis. Her cancer was so difficult to diagnose. We ran test (blood work, xrays, etc) and it was all fine. Although I seriously love and trust my vet, I got two additional opinions. It was my primary that finally caught it. Common sense said it was a leg muscle/ligament injury or the back. We kept trying different things and it was a month or so with trying different things before we finally figured out or that it was able to be detected that one leg was slightly different than the other. Now I feel I am back in the same cycle although her leg symptoms are somewhat different. There is nothing to aspirate and I don't want them to go into her leg to look around. I feel conflicted and frustrated that she is dealing with this.
Sorry to vent. Having a very rough dog week/month. My other boy is having complications. With him there is no one to network with. I cannot find anyone that has had his situation although there must be others. There are vets around the country and at colleges following his case. They are trying to figure out if there is anything they can do to help him with his new issues.
I would seriously trade places with her if I could. I have had two or more dogs my entire life. I have loved them all deeply but Bella has been "that" dog to me since the day we met. She is by far the most intelligent dog I have ever met. She is intuitive, gentle, and loving. She has literally never, ever done anything wrong since we brought her home. She has never made a mess, chewed anything, had an accident.....nothing.....ever. I think she had to be the good dog to balance my mischievous Golden. Her only shortcoming (to some) is that she is completely submissive and scared of thunderstorms. She also 100% looks to me to protect her - it is not the other way around with her. I have no doubt she would run if a bear was coming at me. So while my other two dogs would roll with it, she waits for me to make her better and tell her things are going to be okay when things go bad.
I'm so sorry you are having to deal with issues with both your furfaces together. My heart goes out to you and I'm sending much healing energy your way. Hopefully rest and more pain relief with the anxiety pills will help by Monday. Please keep us posted.
Hugs (((())))

You are not venting, you are worried and frustrated! We get it! We are here with you!
Okay, she showed pain when they checked up and down her spine. She has been biting at her remaining rear leg. They have not done xrays of spine or leg, correct? Maybe when you fo back Monday you can insist on further evaluation along those lines. You are very tuned into your girl. Follow your gut. I know because of your previous experience where she was just diagnosed as a sprainat first, even after second opinions, this new challenge has to be so frustrating and scary.
If you do have to call back for an appointment Monday, and I hope you don't, I wish you coukd get an appointment with a different veterinary group. At the very least, have them check her out wkth xrays. I guess they woukd show any spine issjes, pinched nerves, et.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading more about Bella and what a special girl she is...a very special GOOD girl! Your love for her, and hers for you, comes shining through.
Really hoping that rest and the meds will make a difference. .This coukd be the perfect combination she needs, along with complete rest.
And stay away from Bears!
Sending lots of love and healing energy!

There's no doubt she is getting great care with all those specialists and it sounds like in the coming week you'll get closer to answers. I'm wondering if the vet has plans to put her into rehab therapy at their practice? If so, what kind of modalities will be used? A good practice will have certified CCRT or CCRT-certified practitioners and utilize several types of diagnostics and rehab therapies, from pain management like acupuncture and prescription meds, to massage, range of motion and finally water therapy.
Never apologize for getting other opinions, you would be surprised how many people found out their pets had cancer because their primary vet missed it (myself included). You are a great advocate for her.

Bella update. She has seen three vets (each general with a specialty or specialists) and is on strict "bed rest" for two weeks and on more meds than my grandmother used to be. My Velcro dog is having trouble when she is stuck in a small room instead of right beside me - pain or not. If she is not improving or getting any worse then they will run a ct scan. Hoping for the best..... Just an exhausted dog mom. My other collie is potentially in surgery right now. They are doing a sedated flexibility tests. If he passes, they will do the surgery. If not, we will let him continue as is until he is no longer able to get around.
Good gosh! You have so much on your plate. We are here with you, and for you.
Hoping the bed rest for Bella is what makes a positive difference. Patience...ugh...so hard
Sending best wishes to Bella and yiur other pup for the best possible outcome! Keep us posted when you jave a chance.
Love and hugs
