Pacey loves sniffing everything in sight when we go out for our walks. He's new to our family, and to the neighborhood so his curiosity is totally understandable. However, as Pacey is missing his front left leg, he tends to lose his balance when bending down to sniff, and thus takes a small tumble quite often. Being a first time tripawd owner this really stresses me out, as i am afraid that he will hurt himself, or injure his existing leg.

Is this common? I should also mention that Pacey was born with his leg missing, so he's used to it. Am i just being overprotective and freaking out for no reason?

Thanks!

Hi Pacey's mom...what a wonderful gift you have given Pacey to welcome him into your home and family. I love to hear about angels on earth...:-)

I know the feeling - when Zeus does a chin-dive or trips or loses his balance it just breaks my heart and at first I completely freaked out and fussed and made a big deal over it, but that isn't being a strong pack leader as I soon found out...so now (it still upsets me greatly when I see it happen), I just say "you're OK...c'mon, let's go" in an upbeat and loving voice and pretty much completely ignore what happened. If we make a big deal out of it, then so will they. I, too, am always afraid of Zeus injuring his other legs/bones...but I guess I have turned that over to his Higher Power who has done a pretty good job of taking care of him. It's not to say that I don't keep him from rough housing too much with his brother or jumping in and out of the car...but when it comes to everyday walking and sniffing and stair taking, I let him do his thing - he seems to know his limits.

I hope this helps!

Heather - That does really help. It's exactly what I needed to hear. I guess being overprotective won't stop him from losing his balance.  Pacey just fell asleep next to me on the couch for the first time. He's really a sweetheart and i'm so glad that we adopted him.

Zeus is gorgeous and is really lucky to have such a great mom!

Thanks for the advice 🙂

Hey Pacey & Mom,

Try not to worry too much. It's perfectly normal to do a face plant every now and then. In fact my pawrents called me "Mister Stumbles" after my surgery.

Like your Mom, it really freaked my own Mom out when she saw me fall, but it never bothered me one bit. Mom used to worry about my remaining front leg too, but like Heather advised, you just gotta get that worry out of your head and turn it over to the universe. Not to say that you shouldn't monitor his activity; sometimes we dogs don't know when to say "when." So if you see that catching frisbees in the air, or soccer balls, or walking a lot is wearing him out, be sure to adjust your play accordingly. For me, Mom and Dad still threw a frisbee, but just real low to the ground.
