Being that I don't have kids, I've never been exposed to cribs or toddler mattresses. But recently I was in Wal-mart and someone had one in their cart and I noticed it looked like the perfect dog bed. So, I checked out the baby department and found that the mattresses for cribs are like mini-mattresses. The size looks perfect to me for a dog and are cheaper than a fancy dog bed. (sheets are pricey tho)
They had a Sealy ortho crib mattress for $59 at Walmart!

Has anyone tried a crib mattress? I'm temped to get one for the bedroom but I'd like to see if anyone else has bought one and if their dog liked it? I would have bought it without hesitation if it were Comet since it has the word 'ortho' in the name!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Good idea!!! and $30 cheaper than the dog bed I bought Rio... I'll be interested in hearing if anyone's tried it/whether it would work.

Please let us know if you do go ahead and buy one as I would like to tease MBBVP about sleeping in a baby's bed!
Heavenly kisses,
Angel Abby
(Seriously, that is a smart idea. The ortho dog bed we bought Abby - her Deluxe Deep Dish - cost a small fortune. Although she really loved it, and I loved thinking about pizza every time I saw the name on it.)
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. My youngest child is 2, and I thought of using his crib mattress for Scout after his amputation. In the end I decided it was too uncomfortable-- crib mattresses are designed to be really, really firm (i.e. hard and uncomfortable) in order to prevent accidental suffocation. Furthermore, the waterproof exterior of the mattress made it hot. All three of my children detested sleeping in a crib- they preferred a nice soft, comfortable adult bed (I'm sure that had nothing to do with snuggling up next to mom...).
I purchased a fantastic dog bed for Scout-- I actually think it was recommended on this site.

Scout was big, so I ordered the 55X37 inch one with the denim cover-- It was $124.90 with shipping. I love this bed and cannot say enough good things about it. It was the perfect size and oh so comfortable. I slept on it many nights next to Scout, and after Scout died, my two oldest children slept on it for weeks (the same children who wouldn't touch a crib mattress with a barge pole)
Finally, like everything, you get what you pay for-- a $59 crib mattress is bottom of the line-- I believe my crib mattress was $125 nine years ago.
Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
Valentina sleeps on a twin bed. We had to cover it with a washable material to keep the smell out and so her claws didnt make holes in it. She has been sleeping on it for about 5 years and she loves it. I get on it with her sometimes. She freaks out when I take the blankets off to wash them. But she is so excited when I put the blankets back on lol. The main reason I decided to use the twin mattress is because there weren't any beds large enough for her. She likes to sleep all stretched out. When she does stretch out the mattress is almost the perfect length from her nose to tail. She is a very long Dog. Also most of the beds we found had washable covers but the smell still permeated the insides of the bed. And the fabric was never strong enough to hold up to her weight and claws. I would buy her a $120 bed just to have her claws rip the fabric a couple of weeks later. I am somewhat obsessed with keeping the Dog beds clean so we covered the mattress with a material used to cover boat seats. It worked great! Over the that I use a fitted sheet and then a comforter. I wash them very often. They get stinky fast and it can smell like a pet store in here lol! I even have a separate washer and dryer in my garage only for the Dog's bedding. When I washed them in the family washer too much Dog hair got in there and it was hard to get out. Big clumps of it got stuck places and it grossed me out so I have one just for them. Thank goodness for that because of all that drainage Valentina had after her surgery. I had to wash towels and blankets several times a day! Anyway not sure about the toddler or crib mattress. Maybe for a medium sized Dog it would work just fine. My Doberman would probably do ok on one. They are really firm though. I probably didnt help much but I like this subject because I had such a hard time trying to find an appropriate Dog bed for Valentina.

we used my youngest sons old cot mattress for our old staffy when he had MAJOR surgury as a bed inside (our dogs are mostly outside dogs) it worked great it was big enough to stretch out on and firm enough that he didn't have any issues getting up. In the end we had to put it away because he was spending all day on it would only get off for food or toilet 🙂 It was also used for Kayla hile she recovery from her amp. We didn't have the money for expensive dog beds so had to make do with what we had but it worked great and if they ever stop chewing their beds they will get it back permanatly, at the moment they have a spare couch!
We used Noah's crib mattress after Chili Dawg's amputation. He slept on it for the 2 weeks of recovery, but after that he moved to the floor. I think it was because the weather warmed up and he preferred to sleep on the cold wooden floors. We kept it out, but he didn't move back to it. He usually only slept on his dog bed only in the winter anyways, so we would have gotten it back out when winter hit.

Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.
