Hi everyone! My 11 year old golden retriever, Atticus, had his front right leg amputated about 2 months ago. He has been doing really well overall - gets around easily, doesn't seem to be in any pain, etc. However, today I noticed his front left leg has been giving out. He doesn't wince or react much - just falls and gets back up. I palpated the leg and he doesn't seem to be in pain in any specific area. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm not sure if he is just tired or if he injured his remaining front leg from twisting it or something? Thanks!

Hey it’s good to hear from you and even better to know that Atticus has been getting around well for the most part.

So what does Atticus’ day look like? How long and how far are his walks? The buckling could be related to weakness in his core strength. It takes time to build that up, and the right kind of exercises. Have you considered having him evaluated by a canine rehab therapist? These folks can show you how to get him strong so he doesn’t buckle, and maybe recommend a wrist brace to support him (don’t order one without expert help though OK?). The best part is that Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit too! Your vet might be able to refer him to one and if not we can help, just PM me your location.

For now I would scale back his activity so that he doesn’t do any serious damage to that precious leg. Try interactive brain games to keep him busy, and see if your vet can prescribe an anti-inflammatory to help with some pain relief (dogs are masters at hiding when they hurt).

Keep us posted OK?

Great to hear jow well sweet Atticus has been doing.....even with the stumble here and there.

Can only ditto everything  Admin said.  So easy to get a tweak here and there with a tripawd.  So yes, as Admin pointed out,  little slower pace for now, ,,maybe e an antiinflmmatory,  etc.

Hey mew 521. We have a 12 heal old golden mix. We’re  trying to figure out if he’d do ok with an amputated front leg. How did Atticus do once he started having problems with his front leg? I’m really concerned about doing this to our pup so close to his overall life expectancy.

thanks so much

greg
