Greetings,
Our pup (7 year old) became a tripawd last June. Since then some arthritis that was there before but very minor accelerated in his back hips and front shoulder. I was looking at getting a "Hip Hound Brace" from Ortho Dog but at $85 I figured I'd ask around to see if anyone has used one and their experience with it.
Our boy Charlie had to have his front leg amputated for what we thought was osteosarcoma but turned out fibrosarcoma. I'll write another post about that because boy what a scary adventure that was!
Hi Ryan,
Welcome to you and Charlie, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
I don't have any experiences with using braces for dogs, hopefully some of our other members can help.
My initial take looking at the ORTHO DOG Hip Hound Brace is that it might not stay on correctly for a front amp. You might also try posting in our Ask A Vet Forum to see if Dr. Pam has any experience with these types of braces.
Is Charlie on any supplements or meds for his arthritis? My quad pug Tani had severe arthritis so I do have some experience with that.
And yes, please do write a post and introduce yourselves!

Can't wait to hear more about Charley's "adventure"! Yeah, this whole journey is just full of surprises!!
As Karen mentioned, she and others have a whole lot of advice on arthritis with quite impressive results. Hopefully this will be helpful in addition to the other options you are checking out for Charley.
Clicked onto the link. Perhaps with a call to them they could help modify it someway for the front leg amp. Would LOVE to see a "before" and after video. That would be the clincher!
Just wanted to say "welcome" and you've definitely come to the right place for all sorts of information znd support!
Best wishes to you and Charley!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Hi Ryan and Charlie welcome! Yes we would love to hear more about your experience becoming a Tripawd.
Front shoulder pain is very common in Tripawds, especially front-leggers. These articles about pain management for Tripawds explain more and tells you how to help him feel better.
As for the harness, that's a new one, never seen it but thanks for bringing it to our attention. Karen is right though, since it requires two front-limbs to keep it in place, it probably wouldn't work on Charlie. I think that $85 would be better spent on a consult with a rehab vet to make sure you know what kind of pain your dealing with. Keep us posted OK?

Hi Ryan and Charlie!!! I just wanted to welcome you to this community. I don't have any personal knowledge in dealing with arthritis and front leg amputee. My Leland was a 108lb Dobie who was a hind leg amp. Sadly we had to let him go when he was 4 1/2 years old so we never got to experience things that come with older age.
What breed is Charlie? We'd love to see some pictures of your precious pup and here about how he's done as a Tripawd.

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
Thanks everybody. Just wanted to post real quick that I haven't abandoned this thread. I'm a stay at home dad with a 16 month old so between the dog, the kid, and the house....time is a luxury these days. I have started supplements, and he's on Novox. I'll get some details on what supplements I'm using now I can't remember the name off the top of my head. Carprofen seemed to have really good results but was so expensive through the vet so they sent a RX to an online retailer for the Novox. We live on the edge of the lake and with his double coat it'll only have to thaw until he wants to go in which will be a great low-impact workout. But since the winter seems eternal in this part of PA it's been rough on the ol' boy.
Oooh hopping over there now!
