This coming weekend my family will be moving down off our mountain top closer to work and school, out of the land of perpetual mud and expensive home energy bills and outlandish gasoline consumption. I'm looking forward to not having to haul and split firewood, not tracking in constant mud and pine needles and dead animals (that's Dakota's contribution). On the other hand, I fully expect at least a couple of weeks worth of stink-eye and sulking over this.

One major change: It will require navigating a full flight of stairs for every outdoor visit, so Dakota and his harness will become good friends. I hope he's up to the challenge of doing stairs several times a day. We seriously considered this when we found this place, but the other wonderful fit for us had hardwood all through the house. Dakota's Man said he thought it would ultimately be easier on D to haul him up and down stairs than to expect him to pick a path through rug runners, as he'd never had to do that. I think he's right. What a thoughtful guy!

Anyone wanting to offer up prayers, voodoo dances or nekkid midnight moon dances to ensure a smooth transition for this good boy and the monster roommate, I'll take 'em. Gladly!

paws crossed for a smooth transition...please email your new address...   with the harness, the stairs should be fine..bet it doesn't take dakota long to figure it out along...although, we did have a nice long 'smudgie' thing develop on the wall on the way down and the way up...  just saying....

Good luck with the move. Hope Dakota does well on the stairs. Maybe a dead animal placed strategically will help motivate him to climb up/down.

Hope you all enjoy the new locale,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Oh good luck this weekend! I hope that the move goes well. Watch out for the drywall, I think Evelyn's already eyeballing it.

As for the stairs...I agree, bring an ol' moose leg inside and rub it all over the carpet!

Seriously though, he'll do fine, you'll see.

So, have fun!  Hopefully, you'll enjoy the new place! Good luck with the stairs!

Congrats on finding something closer to work, I really understand about commutes and how fatiguing that can be.  As far as your funny girl and her roomate goes, they will love it as long as you love it.  It will be a new adventure for them, and moving as a pack will just re-affirm your ties.

I love your pics from the house you are in now, the fire place looked so cozy.  I hope your new place is as homey 🙂  I love our hardwood floors, with all the pine needles we have and the mud, it makes it so easy to clean up.  It is the carpet runners that get destroyed fairly quickly.  They just can't seem to take the same beating that the hardwoods do.

Best of luck, prayers for a happy home,

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

You know Elizabeth, I have griped for years that whoever built this house didn't understand much about keeping it clean. Hardwoods here would make perfect sense, but the whole house has off-white carpet. On a dirt road with a dirt driveway. Go figure. Oh yeah, no mudroom, either. You just step inside and everyone jockeys for position removing snow boots.

The new place has carpet, but we won't have the mud and junk to track in. That will be nice, as will the more sensible floorplan that will be much easier to heat. (What kind of builder makes over 3000 square feet of space on two levels with no heating zones? Either you heat the whole sucker or none. Dumb.)

I think when we show up with the dogs, they will both look at me like I'm nuts. And I fully expect both to try to turn and run when I open the door. It will be interesting if nothing else. I hope I can remember to give my son the video camera. That might make it worthwhile!

I just remembered the first time I brought the pug girls to the new house.  I bought the house I am in now about 6 years ago, which was about 6 months before Maggie's amp.  Well, Mag had lived in my first house her entire life, and she was notorious for not liking new things.  Plus, the kitchen and dining area had wood laminate floors- the only thing about the house I didn't like.  I didn't like it because it never looked clean, and I thought the pug girls wouldn't like it because it was so slippery.

After closing I brought the pugs over- thinking with Mag that I would need several visits to get her comfortable.  Well, she took to the house like she had always been there!  She and Tani galloped from room to room, played in the closets, and ice skated on the kitchen floor.  Neither one of them minded the slippery surface.

The only thing Mag didn't like was the linolium floor in the little room off the kitchen that led to the back yard.  There was even good traction - but she refuesed to walk on it!  It was pretty ugly, but still....

When I replaced the laminate flooring I also replaced the linoleum.

Good luck with the move, and the introductions!

Good luck with the move!! I can totally identify with having to haul firewood and contend with mud, and other stuff tracked in constantly! And then heating a whole huge house and then all the bills. Simpilfy - yes! I'm actually thinking along the same lines 🙂

Sending hugs & wags for a sane and easy relocation for all,

Good luck on your move!!  Moving is never fun so we'll definitely be sending you lots of pawsitive moving thoughts or maybe midnight moon dance thoughts minus the nekkid (you know, the neighbors may not appreciate that.)  surprised

Enjoy your new place!

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!
