Hello everyone!
I have been having trouble getting my dog to eat her normal food. I don't think she is nauseous or ill - as she eats her treats that contain her pills without issue and she doesn't have diarrhea or vomiting.
To combat this I have tried dressing up her food with various treats, and without a doubt she will eventually turn her nose up at what I give her.
I have read online that I should not do that because it only reinforces that picky behavior. For the past 3 days I leave her food out for 30 minutes and if she hasn't eaten it I take it away.
She hasn't touched her food in 3 days....
I am a little worried since she in actively on Palladia. Her behavior is completely normal and she has been begging for food more now then she has.
I am at a loss for what to do. Do I continue giving her what she should be eating and then take it away if she doesn't eat it? With the thought if she is truly hungry she will eat? Or should I give her whatever she wants because she is on chemo? I just worry with giving her whatever she wants she will eventually have an upset tummy.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Just went back and refresh my memory on your Sweet Addie She is one strong girl and you are a wonderful advocate for her.
Keep your Onco in the loop as far as what's going on with her eating. For now though, I would definitely give her anything she will eat. Things like warm rotisserie chicken maybe even some scrambled eggs and bacon with some cheese in it, stinky liverwurst, cheese pizza....whatever it takes. There is a dog food you might want to try too. It's called Fresh Pet Chicken it's in refrigerator section of dog food. I think Petco and Pet Snart carry it, as well as Target and some grocery chains like Whole Foods.
Also try feeding her off your dinner plate that may have some left over scraps, along with the chicken or bacon and eggs, etc,
Obviously you don't want an upset tummy, so maybe give her several small meals a day. But zI would back off the kibble for now until her appetite picks up.
Again though, let her Onco know as maybe the Pslladia needs to be reduced or the Pred needs to be increased, etc.
Glad that she's doing well overall. Now let's get that sweet girl to chow down some food!! Whatever it takes....try some steak too.
Hugs

Hmm. You're doing everything that makes sense to try, which is great. But when you have chemo in the picture, all bets are off. Three days is a long time with no food. For now, I'm with Sally: give her whatever she wants at this point, ASAP, and let your oncologist know.
For dogs, food is so much more than about taste. It's also about smell. If a dog can smell pill residue even in their bowl, it will affect their appetite. We have some Nutrition blog posts you may want to check out because they talk about doing things like feeding off paper plates to eliminate contaminating bowls with pill residue (even diswashing doesn't remove it!):

Hello,
Thank you both for responding!
I told my onco and she is suspects Addi is being picky.
For now I am to give her some Mirtazapine and some boiled chicken and plain rice to see if that will do the trick and slowly introduce her back to her normal food.
Hope everyone is doing well!
Hey I'm in the Tripawds Chat right now if you want to talk.
Yes, she is being picky. But the question is: WHY?
So I hope the Mirtazapine works. IF not, call them and ask for Cerenia and Entyce, both should stimulate her appetite.
Keep us posted OK?

Hmmmm....not eatng for three days and not eaying treats.......picky or not, she needs food! Not a Vet and not dismissing what the Vet says an not giving Vet advice (I think I've covered all my bases), I would still try to entice her with yummy foods. Certainly chicken is a good start. And as Jerry was saying, dogs go by smell so maybe try her eith some stinky liverwurst roo.
Anyway, let us k ow how it goes. We'll be cheering for her!
