sf-frownMy mother's dog is not eating as well as she used to eat. She has had one chemo treatment. She has had amputation surgery.
Her dose of K9 Immunity is 7 pills daily. They are actually capsules. Capsules don't work well hidden in treats. If she isn't eating well, I hate to open the capsules up and put on food, then she occassionally won't eat. If she does eat once a day, should I put all 7 pills in that meal?
My mother has been poking them down, just to make sure she gets them. Can she poke all 7 at a time?
Please offer suggestions. Treats don't seem to work, especially not consistently. She sometimes won't eat pill poppers.
Will capsules work well with pill poppers?

Maybe you should stop the K9Immunity until she feels like eating better?  I didn't give my dog her supplements when she didn't feel like eating after surgery..it was hard enough to get her to eat something, I wasn't going to worry about her supplements.

Otherwise, greenie pill stuffers work well in this household..

Good luck...hope she feels better soon...

This was recently posted on the Dog Cancer Blog ... I just quickly skimmed the article, as we don't have an appetite problem, so I'm not sure if this fully applies to your situation.  Maybe this drug is something to talk to your vet about???

Hope she feels better soon!

My dog loved the pill pockets, so they worked for tablets and capsules.

But if your dog's appetite is off due to chemo, she just might not want to eat for a while. When did she have chemo? After Doxy (Adriamycin), my dog's appetite was pretty much gone for a few days (and believe me, he was normally a VERY food-motivated dog, to say the least). The first thing I could get him back on was plain cooked meat (no canned food and few of his regular treats). The next round of chemo we avoided the loss of appetite by using Cerenia proactively.

If she had chemo and amputation close together in time, that is even more reason to not feel like eating. Just make sure she is drinking enough liquids.

Not sure about giving 7 capsules at one time. Sounds like a lot, especially if she doesn't feel like eating much. I doubt it is so critical that she gets all of them right now.

Sorry to hear that she's a little under the weather and not so hungry. Tai gets 8 K9 immunity caps a day which I split into two doses. When she was feeling a little fussy about eating (after chemo etc) I sometimes resorted to boiling a chicken breast and hiding the pills in that. She also is a lover of cheese slices and cream cheese so that works well for smuggling the caps into her. On non-nauseous days I mix a small amount of grain free canned food (the stew type which has lots of juice) with her kibble and it is enough to hide the caps and have her just eat them without knowing. Good luck with the K9 Immunity . Hope she feels better soon. Hugs to you both.

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.

Check out this existing topic has great suggestions for getting dogs to take their medication.

We were lucky enough to have Jerry gobble up all his K9 Immunity pills with his morning meal. For other supplements given without food, however, we simply placed them down the back of his throat by hand. If your dog is Ok with this, it may work best. And if you mom is not OK doing so, she can try using a Pill Gun ...

We found this Pill Gun at EntirelyPets.com, for about $2.90 each...

Liverwurst and cream cheese are other suggestions that often work, as well as the Pill Pockets.

Finally, to answer your question, yes, feed all the K9 Immunity pils at once, with food, preferrably in the morning.
