I don't know where you live but I've got an itchy dog too (Jasper). Our vet diagnosed her with 'seasonal' allergies which sucks since we live in LA and we basically have one season - warm! So maybe allergies? Jasper got a shot and some allergy pills and that seems to help. We'll re-evaluate in a couple months!

Good luck!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Yep, I definitely agree with Alison, allergies are a huge possibility, especially with those terrier-type pups. It is best to have her evaluated by her vet, though, plus even though she doesn't seem to have any fleas, one bite could cause a boat-load of itching that would seem unbelievable. My first Lab girl had an obscene allergic reaction to flea bites, and just one or two would send her off the charts into relentless scratching, redness, and so many awful hotspots.

Also, after seeing the vet for your girl, I have used omega 3 & 6 supplements for my Labs, recommended by my vets, that seems to have always vastly improve their skin and coat and to greatly reduce any moderate seasonal itchiness from allergies or just dry skin.

Let us know what is going on with Sally, hopefully you will get to the bottom of the problem quickly and get her itchiness under control.

Hi Destiny,

Sounds like good advice. One of my dogs gets a red blotchy belly from running through brush and stickers. The vet suggested I wipe her belly when we come in to get any irritants off her. If you have tried everything I would definitely look at her food. Even though a dog can eat a food for years without problems they can become allergic to it. My sister's cow dog became intolerant of Beneful and developed hives. Once she switched her food they all went away. Good luck.

Penny, I agree with you on the food allergy thing......and you mentioning Beneful is spot on. I certainly do not want to talk bad about any foods out there, but this particular food is awful....every dog I know that has eaten this stuff has had terrible allergy and other issues from it. It is loaded with sugar and so many preservatives, definitely not good for a regular diet. We all try to give our pups and kitties good quality food and there are many out there, but I also think there are a few that are not so "quality". I am sure there are those that feed this food and have not had any problems, but my experience is just the opposite.

Hello.  I've had allergy issues with many dogs, basically of two sources: food allergies and cleaning product allergies.

Food allergies:  dairy products especially.    You may want to switch to a hypoallergenic dog food and see if it helps.  Before Johnnie was diagnosed with OSA we used the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic kibble.  How, he is eating home-cooked, and loving it (of course).

Another potential allergy source:  floor cleaners, especially the ones that have nice scents.  The products that I have found are safe for allergic dogs are:  bleach water (Clorox), alcohol, and white vinegar.    That is basically what I use at home in the kitchen floor and other places where dogs like to lie down.

Good luck!

Daniela

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Hey Nat! Nice to hear from you! How's Destiny?

Daniela is right, floor cleaning products, lawn chemicals and the like can be horrible on dogs. Our Wyatt Ray gets terribly itchy when we visit family in Los Angeles, where everyone uses scented cleaning products and lawn fertilizers. And food is another big issue.

What is your friend feeding her pup? One thing to remind her of; we are what we eat and the same is true for dogs. Commercial dog food can be total crap sometimes, you really have to feed good stuff and supplement with EFAs (essential fatty acidts) and omega-3s, found in fish oil, eggs, sunflower oil. But again, it has to be quality stuff or it can be worthless.

In order to solve an itchy dog problem you really have to look at the environment and the diet, both good places to start.

I can so relate to your itchy dog! My Melody has been scratching now for nearly 3 years. We've worked with the vet on several theories, but so far we haven't gotten to the bottom of the itch. It's definitely worse when the seasons change. Typically in the spring her poor little face swells so bad her eyes are nearly shut. All we do is make sure we've got Benadryl handy.

Good luck!!!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Hi,

Just my opinion but I don't think Pedigree is considered a very good dog food. May not be the problem but I would upgrade for sure. The dog food advisor is a great site.

My dog is allergic to wheat, corn and we think chicken. So I have to feed food with none of these in it. I feed Earthborn Holistic Duck and Pea. Read carefully, as some that are not chicken have chicken fat or meal in them. We also do Benadryl for the intense days. Something else to consider, My guy broke out with intensely itchy blotches. I called the vet saying that his allergies were extra bad. Turns out, he had a Staph infection on his skin, probably from scratching it open. He likes to lay in this dirt hole under a tree in our yard, so I figure he got dirt in an open spot at some time. I think he definitely has a grass allergy also ..Lori and TY

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

I agree, Pedigree is a corn-based food that can have a lot of potential itchy triggers in dogs. I know that the one time we fed Wyatt Ray a food with corn in it he itched like craaaazy, I had to toss it and get him on a grain-free formula. Once I did he was fine again (although he still gets itchy when around lawns and carpets treated with chemicals). Refer your friend to the Dog Food Advisor, lots of great information there about diet and nutrition that can make a huge difference.

And we're doing good here Nat, thanks for asking. I hope Desi can find a nice cool spot to enjoy summer!
