I lost my Jake last Wednesday and since then, I've personally met three other families who's dogs passed from cancer recently. I started wondering what the common link was with all our pets, and my first thought was food. They are all eating from the same pool: commercially supplied dog food (most of which contains corn). Most of the corn in the US is genetically modified...especially the corn fed to livestock/pets. I started researching GMO's and found some really horrible things like this: (WARNING: Graphic pics of mice)

I had no idea. I did not know about grain-free dog food until Tripawds, but even grain-free dog food contains GMO ingredients! Not to mention, our own food supply. The more I read, the more my stomach churns. I couldn't find any mention of GMO's on the forums and I was curious what everyone here thinks about this?

Elizabeth, thank you so much for postng this. Here yo are, in the middle of your own grief, but still reaching out to help others.

The link was really informative. It just seems like it's almost impossible to get away from anything harmful food-wise.

Don't jave any specific iit into GMO links on the site, but perhaps others will chime in.

It's nice to see Jake's avatar picture. His beautiful bue eyes ...love those eyes! He's so proud of you for carrying on his legacy by helping others.

Hugs and love to you. Jake will always be remember ed here!

That is such an interesting thought and one worth looking into further. It's my personal belief that it's a number of things are playing into the rise in cancer diagnoses, including more awareness/testing by pawrents, and the toxins in our environment.

In our 2011 Tripawds Amputation Survey, we did find that even some dogs who ate a raw diet all their lives developed cancer so who knows, it was a small sampling but came as a surprise to us.

Here is a good podcast by Dr. Sue the Dog Cancer Vet, about diet and nutrition risks for cancer, and a blog post by her colleague, Dr. Dressler, called Is There A Reason for All This Dog Cancer?
