This is the link to the reducing diet Trouble is on.  Some of you have mentioned your tripawd could stand to loose a pound or two also, so I thought others may be interested.  It is very easy.  I substitute ground turkey because Trouble is allergic to beef - don't see why you couldn't use fish or chicken to change it up a bit also.

These are really interesting Shanna, thanks. I'm so glad to hear she's 'reducing' on it.

The only ingredients that have me concerned are the white rice and carrots, which have a lot of starch and sugar in it (= feeds cancer). I'm no nutritionist but what I've read in Dr. Dressler's book says that we should stay away from these for dogs with cancer. I wonder if substituting brown rice for white, and something less sugary than carrots (I know there's one I just can't think of it now) would be just as effective? Also, swapping out the veg oil for olive oil could provide the healthy Omega fats. Of course I would always discuss these with my vet before doing so.

These sure look tasty, thanks for the link!

I don't see why any of the diets couldn't have brown rice substitued for the white - I would think it is equal or better nutritionally.  The one Trouble is on doesn't have rice and I liked that a lot.  The carrots I have a little concern about, but at this point it is the lesser of the evils - didn't want to use Science Diet (vet recommended) because of the corn, the Natural Balance recucing diet was putting weight on, so I'm sticking with this one.  I suspect they use the carrots because there are no other carbs in it for energy.  As soon as I get her down to a maintenance weight, I'll switch to something with just a tad more variety for both she and Duke to enjoy.

It seems like when I was looking, there was a homecooked recipe (very similar to the one I'm using) that said four cups of ANY vegetables.  That leaves it pretty open ended.

Thanks Shanna for posting this!

I've done the South Beach diet and it's similar.

I'm not a health eating person too much but I'm not keen on can veggies except if I'm in a hurry.  There is a lot of salt content and the water makes it lose it's nutrients.  The frozen kind are frozen so fast and they don't have salt.  I like buying (at Walmart) the Bird's Eye California blend.  It has broc, cauliflower, squash, zucchini and carrots.

During the pet food scare, I cooked my dogs their meals.  I cooked brown rice with chicken broth and added chicken breast with the Bird's Eye veggies.  I'm lucky that my dogs eat their veggies.  They (Rugby and Comet) would sit by me when I cut veggies up.  They especially loved cucumbers and squash.  But they'd eat lettuce, too!

Before Rocket, the dogs got a celery stalk and carrot as a treat.  Now we do only very small carrots since Rocket wouldn't eat celery.

Have you tried celery?  I think it's the crunchy thing they like and it's zippo on calories.

Comet is getting a littly piggy right now - I need to lay off the peanut butter cookies.  It will torture her since she gets so excited when I make them!
