Suggestions for commerical dog food diet post-surgery?

Hi, Tripawds,

My dog Jingo just had surgery to remove a hemangiopericytoma form her elbow. It's low grade, but the cells are close to the margins--it was as agressive a surgery that could be done given the location of the tumor and the fact that amputation is not a choice for us right now. The chances of it returning at 60-40 in favor of the tumor.

I don't have time to cook for my dog, but I am willing to give supplements (cottage cheese and fish oil or flax oil)  with a commercial dog food, but I can't cook. I am presently giving Jingo Nature's Recipe senior and Prozyme with one fish oil capsule a day.

I've heard about Blue Buffalo but I also heard that what she's on now is not bad, either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and my healing thoughts go out to all.

Have you checked out the Tripawds Nutrition blog? Lots of great diet recommendations there. The next best thing to a home cooked stew is Honest Kitchen dehydrated dog food mixes. You can even get free Honest Kitchen samples during their current promotion for Tripawds readers.

Some of the best commercial dog food available for dogs with cancer is Wysong's new starch free Epigen. We have also posted a Wysong coupon code if you care to try that. And don't miss our list of recommended grain free kibble. Cancer feeds on carbs, grains and starch, so high protein foods are best!

Hope this helps. If you haven't read Jerry's canine cancer diet and supplements overview, it describes in detail what we fed and gave him throughout his two-year cancer journey.

Honest Kitchen.... I love it. It's all human grade and dehydrated. It takes about 5 minutes to rehydrate. I use the Preference because my dog has food allergies and I can add fish as the protein. It really allows me to control his carb and protein intake.

And most importantly... HE LOVES IT!!!

I will never go back to regular food again.

I really appreciate your website.  I've decided to change my dogs' food to Evo, because it is low in carbs/grain free .  Here is a link: http://www.dogf.....-food-dry/

Also, I will cook for them and provide supplements.  My doggie is a new tripaw and we're going to pick her up today from the hospital and hope for her to conquer cancer!

Thanks for your website!

Welcome Amanda! Can't wait to hear more about your pup. We'll do all we can to help her kick cancer's butt!

The topic of dog food is a timely one, since we're going to interview the Dog Food Advisor himself, Dr. Mike Sagman, during our next Tripawd Talk Radio Show! You can even ask him questions on the air, in the chat or in the discusion forum topic about the show. Here's a link for more details.

BTW here is a anti-cancer diet from Dr. Clemmons--an amazing vet --it was written in 1997, but still relavant. I don't agree with his choice for a commerical dog food, but that's about it.

http://neuro.ve.....AltMed.htm

I used Dr. Clemmons diet for GSM

in my german shepherd and he lived to a month before his 13th
birthday--not bad for a 120 lb. dog with a wasting disease! So I trust
this guy

My vet says canned dog food provides a better cancer diet if I don't want to cook one myself.
