I'm trying to think of 'economic' ways of helping to supplement Jake's diet and I read somewhere that you can buy liver in the grocery store (it's usually pretty cheap) and then you cut it up into small cubes and dry it out for several hours in the oven. Does anyone have the exact instructions? Like how many hours and what temperature in the oven? I'm sure that freeze-dried is probably the best, but I don't think that most of us have that capability.

In the meantime, I always cook chicken thighs with some brown rice once a week, and add that to my doggies' dry food. They really love it!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

P-U! :p

I'm not sure about the oven instructions, but if you have a food dehydrator 1/4" slices should dry out within a day or so. Though i might recommend doing this in the garage.

Here is one:

Ingredients:
 - 3 lb. beef liver
 - Garlic powder
Slice the beef liver as thinly as you can; place slices on racks of dehydrator, sprinkle with garlic powder; dry for 12 -15 hr. OR place slices on several cookie sheets, sprinkle with garlic powder and dry in warm oven about 2 hours until the surface is not moist anymore.  Then place the liver on cookie sheets in a deep freezer for about 10 days to two weeks.
Stagger batches every week to keep the supply going.

I would pick a recipe in which ingredients are as simple, whole and natural, and particularly suitable for cancer patients as possible.  i.e. recipes don't call for flour, corn meal, salt, sweet.  Don't use microwave oven.

Have fun experimenting!

Livers and giblets are pawesome foods, but you don't want to give them more than a couple times a week as they're reallllly rich.

Also you can try giving them raw right out of the container and putting them on Jack's dinner. That's how I like 'em! Stinky but yummy.
