It does sound like mast cell- I've found tumors on Tani and by the time I get her to the vet the next day to aspirate I can't find them!
What kind on biopsy is the vet doing? My experience with mast cell is that a needle aspirate is very definitive for diagnosis. A word of caution: another thing MCTs are notorious for is poor healing in the tissues around the tumor when it is cut into. When we did a needle aspirate on Tani's last tumor it took a week to stop leaking blood. Also when tumors are disturbed in any way, including a needle biopsy, the tumor could grow, the body may dump lots of histamines into the system which can result in allergy type symptoms (including itchiness) and stomach upset. I always put the pugs on benadryl and a stomach med after a tumor is disturbed- I learned that from our oncologist.
We had a case last September of a pup who had a biopsy of the MCT and had complications from the biopsy and didn't survive. When Maggie had the tumor in her knee the oncologist advised against a surgical biopsy for this reason. In our case Mag had a history of mast cell cancer, the needle aspirate showed mast cell, and we were 99% sure we were doing an amputation no matter what type of tumor it was.
I know you need to know what kind of tumor so you can have a plan of attack. I don't mean to scare you, but knowledge is power! Of course the story above is the worst case, but I wouldn't feel comfortable not sharing what I've learned and seen.

Thanks for sharing that story. My vet actually did mention that, and didn't even want to palpitate much beyond, "Yep, that's a huge, firm lump." He plans to xray before anything, to look for bone involvement, and then he wants to open Grady up, both to biospsy, and to see if he can safely remove (debulk, I think he said) as much as he can, due to the size and location. It seems to be attached to the cartilage between his bottom ribs. Then prednisone and benadryl to try to inhibit growth and histamine reaction until we make our next move. He mentioned referring us to an oncologist if it's something he feels is out of their scope, but they are, unfortunately, more experienced with mast cell than they'd like to be. The nearest oncologist to us is over an hour away, and we love our vet, so of course we hope it doesn't come to that. My son is taking this pretty hard; he was home for winter break just 3 weeks ago, and Grady was AWESOME, so it's pretty shocking to him. He's trying to raise funds and help out from far away, poor kid
Yeah, that KAREN knows her stuff, that's for sure! She and Luanne both have more i sightinto this than they would like.
GRADYIS FEELING GOOD AND HAVING A BLAST!! And that is great!
Sounds like you have a great vet and a great relatinship! That's so important.
Just curious, these "things" seem to pop up pretty quickly. Do most of this type of a "lump" show up really firm, kinda' rou d and hard and maybe marble size? Or do thet show up more on the softer side and a little more on the "squishy" side and larger? Do they tend to show up in a more specific area? If these "things" show up in a dog with osteo (amputation and chemo treated), is this "mast cell" something that shows up in cnjusnction with oste? Or is this ot usualy associated with oste.....and just is a lump according to vets.
Just curious and this seemed to be a good "discussin thread" Mr. Grady has provided. Such a helpful boy!!
Keep on keepin' on Grady!! You are surrounded by ahole lotta' love and that helps heal!! YES IT DOES!!
Lots of love and hugs!

Its sooooo important to have confidence in your vet!! I'm glad you have a good relationship.
Your son sounds like cool kid, trying to raise funds- that's awesome! We don't always feel like we have any power or control on the cancer journey- doing something positive like fund raising gives some purpose.
I did two cancers with my pug Maggie too, mast cell first (and ongoing) then oral melanoma. I think the second cancer hit harder than the first. Really! Isn't one enough?
Good luck with the surgery, keep us posted.

Well, I seem to have good news, with a large side of crazy!
Grady's biopsy was scheduled for yesterday. When I called to check on him, the nurse mentioned that he had a drain in, which made me think they must have been able to remove a good bit of his tumor, so I was already feeling pretty good! Apparently, it was much more bizarre than that.
My vet ran xrays before his surgery. Lungs, ribs, spine, skull. His mass was hard and unmovable, so he suspected bone and/or lung involvement. Apparently, nothing lit up. Not just bone, *nothing*, which was surprising. No hint of a tumor. So, he made a small incision to do the biopsy, and gunk started leaking out. This giant, hard as a rock mass was leaking pus and blood. Now, we have no idea where it came from, since there was no cut, scratch, splinter, or injury that we know of, but Grady had the biggest, hardest abscess they've ever seen. There was no fever, the area wasn't hot, no change other than the lump itself. He's currently sleeping like a baby, completely shaved on his tummy and side, with a Penrose drain in (that my kitten is desperate to play with, lol). As an aside, all of his xrays look great, and even his arthritis hasn't gotten any worse. I absolutely cannot believe the bullet we just dodged, especially since his behavior the past 3 days or so had really seemed off. He was really lethargic and kind of depressed. Well, I guess I would be,too, with the amount of nasty that he had pooling against his ribs and lungs! They initially thought he'd lost his hearing while under, but unless he's clairvoyant or just really good at reading my lips, I think he was just out of it and not in the mood to answer them, lol.
Grady on his way to the vet yesterday morning...poor guy thought he was going for a ride. I *did* remind him that when daddy takes him to the vet, they always seem to do surgery, but when I take him, he just gets love and cookies
OMD! This is fabulous news! I'm glad the tumor ended up not being a tumor at all. Now this post really needs to be moved out of the "coping with loss" section!
Quit scaring your pawrents like that Grady! Daisy is going to have an extra treat to celebrate.

Thank you all so,so,SO much!
After he finally woke up yesterday, I had a hard time keeping him settled, lol. Last week, he had really started to seem "sick". We were getting half-hearted tail wags when we walked past him, and he wanted his ball, he just didn't want to run, or even walk fast after it. He just seemed tired and weak, and I honestly thought it was too late to do much of anything. Yesterday, his spark was completely back, and we had to work hard to slow him down. Best birthday present (for me, he already had one, lol!) I could ever ask for!!! He's hopping, "talking" loudly if there's food, and his walk is confident again!
At least now I know how I would react, and what I would do, if I'm faced with really hard Grady decisions Apparently, I would be hysterical first, and then rationally convince my husband that Grady wasn't done yet, and we needed to try chemo, which was making my husband cringe to think about.
I'm having a really hard time keeping my kitten away from the drain. Grady is leaving it alone, but his kitten seems to think it's just a new piece of him to play with
What great news! He probably felt crappy because of the infection. So glad to hear this.
Hang in there Grady!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
Oh happy birthday!!! I'm glad Grady was able to brighten your day, that IS the best gift ever.
Silly kitty, drains are not play toys! Too cute.

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
YES INDEEDY! The BEST present ever!! Thrilled to hear how well he's doing, absolutey thrilled!!
I like your "strategy" should you be faced with more "challenges"! Sounds like a plan.....of sorts!
Play hard and play well Grady! You are magic!
