Im sorry to hear that you need to make this decision, but the mantra is always better a day early than a day late
I didnt know this is the mantra.. My belief tells me that if I'm still unsure and wait an extra day or 2... even if there is some pain. etc.. that is appropriate.... should i be changing my belief? as I'm all about what is best for the animal.
Everyone here is so loving and so caring. We all hurt when one of our family members is faced with the agonizing decision of when to help there beloved dogs or cats transition. All any of us EVER want to do is TRY and find some words of comfort to help ease their hurt.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT OR WRONG TIME WHEN MAKING THIS DECISION WHEN TO TRANSITION. Speaking for my self only, and this is just me, I try and make sure any feedback I may give is guided by what I "hear" the person "saying".
Each individual knows their situation best. Each individual knows their dog best. Each individual knows their own belief systems better than anyone else. And the ONLY thing that matters is the individual's own belief system and how they cope best when faced with this situation.
What you have described above for yourself is absolutely appropriate for you, and for many. What the member described as far as the "mantra" is absolutely appropriate for them and for many. Both thought processes are based in love.
Again, just speaking for myself, I try soooo hard not to interject any personal opinion based on my filters developed through my life experiences. There are ocassions when I do, simply because someone has asked for specifics because maybe my Happy Hannah's situation was similar to theirs.
The bottom line is each person makes the decision out of love and that's really all that matters.❤
Give that handsome Simin a big hug for us.
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
PS I've felt like I've done it too soon....and I've felt like I've done it too late.....and the guilt sucks equally in both. I DO know that the decision was made out of love each time.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
well said Sally! There's never a good answer - you make the best decision you can for everyone and make the decision with all the love in your soul. They know you and they know you're doing the best you can. And I still find that comforting, even this long after making that decision.

Right rear leg amp 7/12/16 due to OSA. Metastatic lesion on her right front leg, January 2017. Joined the Winter Warriors January 19, 2017. Run free my sweet girl.
Exactly, x2! Only you know your animal best and only you can decide the right time, nobody else. In the end you have to make a decision you can live with, so if you are at all uncertain, the guidance of a hospice veterinarian is priceless. See:
