I just wanted to share our story.
We have owned two dogs previously (a Dalmatian for 12 years, then a lab-retriever mix for 13 years). We hadn’t planned on getting another yet, but our younger daughter convinced us it was time and we got our Joanie as a rescue in May 2020. She’s almost 4 years old, a blue tick hound-beagle mix, and was very active before her accident 6 weeks ago. She was hit by a car and lost her front left leg.
Our older daughter’s dog, Luna, also a rescue, just turned one, and is a shepherd-lab mix. They got along fairly well before the accident, and loved playing together. We were hesitant at first after the surgery, and kept them apart for the most part til Joanie’s stitches were out and the vet cleared her.
We followed the vet’s instructions with short walks in the beginning, but Joanie had her own ideas and soon we were back to old routine of long walks around the neighborhood. And the best part is, that in the past two weeks, the “girls” are back to their playing, and although Joanie tires a bit more more quickly, she holds her own with her younger “sister “.
She’s a love, and we look forward to taking her to the beach next summer to swim! 😊
Awww thank you so much for rescuing Joanie and taking time to share! We get a lot of questions from people who want to adopt a Tripawd, or are wondering how their new Tripawd will get along with their existing dogs in the family. So, thank you for showing that everything can turn out just fine!
Do you have any photos to share? We would love to see some, videos too! This is how adding images to the Forums works.
- Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog!
- Right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
- Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.
If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.
Meanwhile, be sure to take advantage of Tripawds Foundation Rehab Reimbursement Program. Even though Joanie is doing great, it can't hurt to have her evaluated by a canine rehabilitation therapist to find out how to keep her strong and injury-free over her lifetime. It's so beneficial to meet with a therapist, that the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit !
Thanks again for sharing and congratulations!
