Questions about incision site--Dottie is STILL seeping

Good Afternoon!

We are now at one week home with Dottie. Things are improving. She's finally eating better which makes us happy. She has lost so much weight. She is also resting so much better with puppy dreams and snores. I hope they are only good dreams!

The thing that continues to concern me is her incision site. We have no signs of infection and over the past couple of days it really looks as though it is healing nicely. Dottie doesn't hesitate to lay on the incision side either (I hope that is ok!). We are on day 9 post surgery (full rear leg amp) and Dottie is still seeping pink tinged fluid from her incision. She also has a small hole along her incision site. The swelling and bruising has decreased significantly.  We've consulted with her vet and she says we are doing a great job and everything looks great. She says because of the extent of Dottie's traumatic injuries that this is part of her healing process and she's formed her own drain tract to release fluid.

Everything I read says the seeping should've stopped by now. I trust Dottie's doc. Do I just need to be patient?

Thank you!

YAY DOTTIE! clap

I would agree that as long as the incision isn't angry looking, or the fluid isn't smelly, that the seepage is expected. She's been through a lot of trauma, and the body needs time to absorb the excess fluid where the leg was. Try not to worry. If it still concerns you after a few days, then ask your vet for another re-check.

Give your champion girl a big smooch from us!

Thank you! I'm going to try not to worry so much.

We are scheduled to go in to see the vet for suture removal on the 27th! We have taken the week off for the holiday so she is getting extra spoiled for Christmas! She just had a peanut butter Kong treat and was VERY pleased.😍

We are reading up and trying to prepare for when she is more mobile in the house. My partner is building a platform bed this weekend so once she can do stairs again she will be able to have her favorite---BED snuggles! We've been rotating sleeping downstairs with her on the lower level for the past week.

Here are a couple pictures from a visit outside today. Puppy push ups!

Yay Dottie! She looks wonderful! I am so glad that she is recovering so well. Some dogs have that fluid build up on the inside and the incision seals so that there is no place for it to go. Many times it gets so much build up and then all of a sudden there is a huge mess of fluid when the skin finally gives, or they have to go in and have the vet make a hole and place a drain. It sounds like Dottie's body is already doing that on it's own which is really a great thing. Just keep an eye on that drainage and keep in touch with her vet so that they are aware of her progress.

Worry warts are us... totally. And proud to be so, lol!

I read your blog story. Just now getting to respond. Sending you the hugest hugs, what an awful thing to have happened. I am so glad that Dottie is coming around and doing well.

Good Morning and Good News!

Miss Dottie is starting to get upon her own for her potty breaks! The seepage is decreasing, hardly any over night and minimal this morning. She's bright eyed today and it is going to be a beautiful day. We are going to spend sometime in the yard so she can get some fresh air and sunshine.

I've been telling her about all her new friends cheering her on. She is wagging a lot this morning.claplaughing

We are planning to have her three teenage heros come visit her in the next week or so. They stopped by the accident and transported Dottie to our vet. ❤️

Have a great day! We will post some more pictures soon!

Good job Dottie!  Looking good.

I checked out your blog too- I'm glad you posted Clyde's story.  You guys have had to deal with so much the last few weeks. It's wonderful that Dottie is getting her sparkle back and will be spoiled for Christmas!

Merry Merry!

Dottie is bouncing back. She got up from her bed and walk hopped all the way outside to potty! She still has some seeping from her incision site but it does seem to be decreasing and the inflammation is going down. We go on Thursday for suture/staple removal! big-grin

Here is link to a smiley Dottie taking a trip outside. I haven't caught pictures of her standing yet but she's doing a pretty good job so far!

So glad to hear how well the beautiful  Miss Dottie is doing😁   Sloooowly, but surely,  she'll get all her sparkle back.  As you can already see, she's  starting  to adjust to this new three -legged thing, and his getting over all the trauma of the surgery, etc.

Have a good Christmas and may all the wonderful  memories  of Clyde help warm your heart.  I'm  soooo glad Dottie is here with uou❤

Dottie is awesome! Thank you for sharing your story because at this moment I’m going through the same thing. My furring baby Joyce, had her hind leg amputated last Thursday and last night the sight started seeping. First day it happens and I began to freak out. It doesn’t smell bad and the swelling went down significantly. As of to her eating, Joyce rejects her dog food and prefers a vegetable chicken soup. It’s what she’s been eating ever since she came home. I can’t help it, she’s a spoiled little girl. Consider making it with chicken, broccoli, parsley, sweet potato, red peppers, and carrots. I hope Dottie enjoys this soup as well;). Warm hugs from Joyce and I❤️
