hi my name is Sara and Harley is my sweet baby girl. We got Harley about a year ago at the animal shelter after her owners died. With Harley it was love at first sight she was perfect. A lot of people say dogs can't smile but I don't believe that to be true bc Harley seems to smile all the time.

But the trouble started about two weeks ago she some how managed to break her toenail off on her back foot. So like anyone who isn't a vet you we tried to take care of it at home. And we thought everything was fine until one day about 3:15 I got off work and I went to love on Harley and noticed her leg smelled all kinds of terrible. Then I noticed her leg had started to turn black and that led to the trip to the vet where he told us she had gaingreen " sorry if it's spelt wrong" and that her leg was cold and dead. And if we didn't take care of the infection it could get in her blood and would kill her. So we got some meds from the vet and brought her home. Then the next morning we got up and checked on her and her skin had fallen off and bone was showing so we rushed her the the vet and they told us there nothing we can do now for that leg it's got to go are she's not gonna make it.

So we had no choice but to let them take it. They kept her about 24 hours before they did  the surgery to make sure Harleys little body could take it. And they decided she could so they did the surgery " we called every hour to see how she was holding up"  after the surgery they called us with an update and she did GREAT " better then they thought she would " about 3 days at the vets they finally let us bring her home and they sent some pain meds home with her and told us not to let her move around to much. The first day with her home was very had bc we were all very afraid to touch her " we thought it would hurt her "

But Harley surprised us by the 2 day she was up running around " trying to we kept making her sit down " and playing and our other dog Bella " she's a black lab " was treating her like her baby " also knocking her down to get out the door at times "  and laying with her in the couch and just helping Harley get used to her new life. So a week past and Harley got stronger and stronger.

We took her back to the vet for her 7 day check up and they said everything looked great. And they said, we will see you next week to get the staples out. So we go tomorrow to get them out " today is augs 3, 2016" and we can not be more ready. Harley doesn't seem to care either way bc even though she lost her leg she still runs and plays like nothing ever.

Hi Sara, Harley and family, welcome! We're sorry you all went through this awful ordeal but are so glad that Harley is doing better now and can get on with life. She sure has a supportive pack to watch over!

If you haven't already, please review our blog posts about rehab and fitness on three legs. As much as Harley has bounced back, over time all of that activity will take its toll unless she's supervised and monitored. We know it's not the easiest thing to do, especially when you have other dogs, kids, etc., but understanding the right kinds of activities for her will help prevent joint stress, injury and pain throughout her life.

Here are some posts to get started:

Oh and it looks like your photos didn't take. Here's a post about adding images to the Forums, if you'd like help let us know. We can't wait to see her!

Thank you for giving. HARLEY and BELLA such a wonderful furever home! 🙂 It sounds like Bella and Harley are great pals!

And thank you for sharing Harley's story. It was very Informative! It helps to keep everyone a little more alert thst a broken toenail could actually turn into something this serious. It's not what anyone would normally think about!

So glad to hear how well Harley is doing! He is clearly a spunky fella'! Would love to see some photos and follow more of his hkurney!
