I know K-state when the girls were spayed didn't use the Tramadol I figured they would use.  They used Tylenol with Codeine.  I figured they knew what they were doing.  And it wasn't a long term use but some vets in the US now feel Tramadol doesn't work like it should but I am no vet

I think that the problem with using Tylenol in dogs is that the safe dose window is small.  It can affect the liver so dogs with elevated liver enzymes should probably not be on it. I use it sometimes for bone cancer pain in case people can't afford an amputation (best with codeine).  People take too much acetaminophen all of the time because it is also in products containing cold medicine, etc so they exceed the safe daily dose and get liver problems which can sometimes be fatal.

Thanks, Dr Pam. There certainly do seem to be a range of views on this. In the UK, it is used quite widely, under veterinary supervision, and at the appropriate dose. A great benefit is that it does not irritate the stomach as NSAIs can. Galliprant is not available here.

If anyone is interested, this is what it says in the AAHA pain management guidelines https://www.aah.....d_cats.pdf

“Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen is contraindicated in cats. In dogs, several early studies revealed a pain-modifying effect in orthopedic surgery, and pharmacokinetic data have been reported. The literature does not appear to indicate that acetaminophen has a proclivity towards hepatotoxicity in dogs.”

And now (sorry Sally) let’s get back to Frankie.

It can the affect all of our livers. So agree people are unaware.

It is as stated lethal in cats!

Dosage and frequency are vital. The critical point here is as always work with our VETS. Follow your own vet's advice.

As Clare stated, she was working with her's as we know Clare is a great advocate for her animals!

All countries do things differently what is available in each are different, so it makes complete sense each has different views on what to use. Not that one is right or wrong different methods. That is what is so beautiful about being an international site and learning all sides never stating one country is better or the views of each Vet.

Follow our vet's advice. They are the experts!

I found this the other night also written by a Vet.

I love all this feedback. It is quite enlightening. I find it amazing that there are so many different courses of treatment around the world. Being a part of this site exposes us to different ideas and methods that I think would be rare to find anywhere else just because of all the different people around the world that it touches. It gives opportunities to learn new things all the time. I think it is safe to say that the majority of us follow pretty closely with our vets, which keeps our furbabies safe.

Hugs Sally heart Sorry your thread got somewhat temporarily hijacked, it was really good information all the way around smiley

So much support from so many places; even though my Tripawd Warrior Princess Roxie has been kicking up her high heels over the Bridge longer than we were blessed with her presence, every time I check back I am again amazed by the love and generosity of spirit that has found a home on Tripawds! It's a much-needed reminder of all the good in the world. But back to matters at paw...

I read in a few places that the reason that some vets have stopped prescribing Tramadol is because dogs don't have the pain receptors that Tram binds-to, so it is less effective than other pain meds and, as already discussed, can be problematic with the liver.  Haven't discussed it with our vet yet as our dog currently on it has perfect blood work every 6 months and there's always something more pressing...

Roxie's inheritor of the big-sister-to-Okey-Dokey-Smokey title, Abby Louise, has been on Tram for some time for pain associated with arthritis, mild hip dysplasia, and general old age complaints. We've been going through a rollercoaster with her the last 3 weeks due to a newly-diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease, gastroenteritis, and esophagitis.  All in the "severe" category.  Evidently brewing for some time and a dental cleaning/extraction pushed her 12+ year old GSD self over the edge and into a week at 2 different 24-hour vets.  And a boatload of new meds.  Most expensive "tooth extraction" chain reaction in the history of our little pack (which is saying something). And Renee, she also developed aspiration pneumonia - sound familiar??  But I digress.

Sista Sally, in digging through the pet pharmacy cabinet today I came across a new 5ml vial of Adequan left from a course we did for Abby last year.  She was one of our real success stories with it.  If you can use it in addition to what you've gotten, I'll send it to you Monday.

Just keep doing what you've always done and listen to that voice inside; you always do the right thing (not to be confused with the easy thing) because you always do it from love.

Best to all, Liz and Angel Princess Roxie Roooooooooooooo Roooooooooooooo

First of all, a big loud  ROOOOOOOOOO ROOOOOOOOOOOO to Soul Sista' Liz❤

With everything  you've got going on, here you are continuing  to give, give, give!  That's  no surprise to anyone  who travelled  this journey with you and the beautiful  Roxie Roooo. Rooooooooo!

I'm bummed your sweet Abby Louise is having  all these issues!  Then again.....yoir dogs always do things a little bit differently than most!!!   Really hoping you can get things turned around.

And yes, Frankie would be so grateful to receive  Abby's adequan!  Between Roxie and Nitro  making sure he stays well stocked with drugs, this boy may never have to make a trip to the pharmacy!

Okey- dokey-Smokey on the left and the beautiful  Angel Roxie on rhe right.  Now we need one of Abby.

And secondly,  Frankie is  thrilled that his thread helped to generate  such great dialogue and sharing of information regarding the Tylenol and all the different  thoughts on it.  😎

What  a great caring community!  For everyone to take the time to provide  input on this important  issue just shows the depth of care we all have for each other❤❤❤

We are one family  brought together and united by our love for our dogs and cats.  Yes,  this journey is so  much more than a support group for amputation.

Paula's tee  shirt she wore at our Virginia Tripawds Pawty awhile back says it all.

Ok so been offline and missed your reply; Adequan going out Friday at the latest. Thank you for the good medicine of Roxie and Smokey together.

Our Abby Dabby is back in residence at the 24-hour vet palace that's, of course, the farther away of the 2 she's been at.  More scoping and xrays and a suddenly grim prognosis.  Her esophagus is severely dilated from the recurrence of vomiting - basically a new megaesophagus condition - that our little core vet team agrees it will take a small miracle to get her through.  We're keeping her there with a feeding tube and lots of injected meds for another 48 hours and will then re-evaluate if there's any improvement. She probably needs over a week there to get stable again but no guaranty that will do it.  And her last 5-day stint was $4,500 (on top of the dental and the 2-days at the first 24-hour clinic AND all the meds) so there's that pesky need to be able to afford to feed the other 5 freeloaders. And no one wants to keep her alive and not living. Primary care vet will be there if/when we need to make that worst of decisions anytime soon. Heartbroken all over again. And another reminder to Be More Dog , live in the moment, and celebrate all the joy that comes our way - and, of course, B R E A T H E.

And buy wine in really big bottles.  cryingcryingcryingpoopicon_png

Blessings and hugs to all, Liz and Princess Roo

Oh Liz!  Hate to hear this new challenge.  Just hate to hear it is happening  to your sweet Abbey Dabby and YOU!!!

Even though I know you are  worried sick and your heart is breaking, that crazy wild sense of humor of yours comes shining  through.  Somehow It makes everything seem a little better.  To be able to find some humor in even dire  situations is a gift that only enlightened Souls have.  Only enlightened Souls can make others feel better while struggling  with their own "earth crises".  It just plain sucks sometimes  being an Enlightened  Soul.

Abby is in good hands.  Albeit expensive  hands, but she's  getting great care and she just may be able to turn things around  with this good treatment  that bypasses her esophagus.

Is there any way possible  you are able to do any of the treatment the clinic is doing at home?? I say that because,  as you know, dogs can "perk up" and show "improvement" just by being home.  Plus, if they think she could possibly improve  with this protocol they are doing, I bet everything they are doing could be taught to you.  And your regular Vet could help oversee the set up, etc.  And home is a lot cheaper!!  I know darn well you could handle it!!  You are one tough and  tough Enlightened  Soul!!!

We're  all sending  pawsitive  healing  energy.  Abby ain't  done yet!

YO!   ROOOOO ROOOOOOOOOO ROXIE!!   Pay attention! Abby needs a little help down here, okay?

Lots of love❤❤❤❤❤.

I am sorry to hear that news. Sally may be correct though regarding the care... maybe? If it is just a matter of learning how to use a feeding tube, that can be taught. In a totally different situation …  I saw several cases of feline hepatic lipidosis which requires a feeding tube over several weeks minimum, and taught clients how to feed their cats through a tube that had been surgically placed and sutured in temporarily.

I don't know if this is the case with your Abby or not, but I cannot see why you could not at least ask. The worst thing that can happen is they say no. It is worth looking in to, especially with your other lovely freeloaders needing to have some more free meals thrown their way laughingIt is too bad they don't have thumbs... or you could send them out to get part time jobs to help foot some bills, eh?

Err..not trying to nose in, not a vet... just trying to help with some options from my own experiences. I hope this helps.

(((Sally))) love ya girl, Mitch has decided going up and down stairs multiple times independently seems to be the thing to do as of yesterday. Coming down on his own now to be let out, and still no accidents... I got some more video of it, it is a sight to behold. My husband told me he went up and came back down at least three times all on his own without prompting or assistance. I am leaning more toward the CBD on this right now as it is only a few days into his Synovi supplements, but maybe because he is on a double dose for start up, it could possibly be helping his comfort level? We shall see. I will have to take a bit of time to document this on Mitchell's little forum.

Sending lots of love, hugs, and puppy smooches to the furbabies.

I know Liz has seen all the well wishes and suggestions  for Abby.  We all continue  to send energy for the best possible  outcome for Abby❤

Jackie, soooo glad to hear Mitchell is working those stairs like a Champ!  He continues to amaze us all!  And Jackie sent Frankie a loving Care Package chick full of Synovi, as well as a few other goodies😎    Yet again another kind act from another beautiful  Soul.❤

And yes Holly 💛and Paula💛, the dogs and I are all safe and sound.  It looks like other than a lot of rain, the part of Virginia  we're in is not getting anything nearly as bad as the poor Souls in the Carolinas.  I know they are as well prepared  as any areas can be, so hopefully  everyone will get thru rhis safely.

Lots and ,lots of love to all.
