Hi, Dr. Pam; we are trying to help another member. Edward is an American living in Korea, and although he speaks Korean, he has difficulty interpreting medical information.

His two cats, 15.5 years old, are suffering from pancreatitis - Jolie is a tripawd from osteosarcoma and has CKD. This is his second bout of pancreatitis. Both were in the hospital on IV fluids & feeding tubes. Both are now home.

Jolie is still not eating on his own. The hospital took the feeding tube out, and he was sent home with a renal liquid diet. They don't give him the dosages and names of the meds prescribed.

Edward_1 said

"They gave a mix of medicines in powder in a pouch that I have to transfer to capsule. Cerinia and stomach coating and blood cell production stimulant I think."

After this hospital stay for both cats, he has exhausted his resources.

My question is - Are these dosages okay for a 3.68 kg cat?

  • Cerenia 16 mg - 1/4 to 1/2 every 24 hours
  • Ondansetron 4 mg -Zofran- 1/2 tablet every 8 to 12 hours
  • Pepcid AC 20. mg 1/4 tablet once a day

What recommendation could you give without physically seeing Jolie?

Much appreciation for your time & any thoughts!!!

Holly

Typically you need a low fat diet and pain control for acute pancreatitis. Cerenia should be 1/2 to 1 tablet once daily (higher dose for cats over 9#). I typically do not use Zofran because it is essentially the same as Cerenia. The Pepcid dose is fine. If they are not eating I would add an appetite stimulant such as mirtazapine or Elura.

Thank you so much for the dosages, and yes, we knew they needed new pain meds and an appetite stimulant.

Edward can call the vet with this information; hopefully, they will prescribe it. There is no reason they could not- they have had both the boys and know what's going on.

We used the Zofan/ondan for our Saxton; it helped him more with his nausea, and the Cerenia helped him more with vomiting.

I also gave him this information from idexx.

MUCH APPRECIATION, Dr. Pam I will tell Edward you posted!
