I know this one is going to be tough one to answer. Just this past week all of a sudden Nova can not find her way the way she used to. I've been trying hard to watch her whenever I can to see if I can document some speciific symptoms. It makes it all the more difficult because she has apparently been 100% blind since last April. She found her way around so well we always suspected she might have some sort of vision left all that time. But every visit with the opthamologist they said she was indeed blind in both eyes. Ok. Well now she moves very, very slowly and bumps into everything. She is so tentative she often stops and whines until I come and grab her collar and guide her to where she wants to go. She can't even find her water dish. She is even more lethargic (if that can even be possible for a couch potato like Nova). She basically lays on the couch all day, getting up twice to eat and pee. That's it. Occasionally she will get up in the night and when she does she just stands and whines. The weird thing is that every time I approach her, her tail wags and she seems happy.
The only thing I notice her doing that is different is that she shakes her head all the time, pretty much any time she's up. You know, like dogs do, flap the ears like they do when they are wet. I thought perhaps it might be an ear infection (she just finished a round of antibiotics for her cough scare, which is now gone), but this problem seemed to occur right after the course of antibiotics were done. As I have also posted recently, we had chest x-rays recently and they were clear.
So I've got the whining and the head shaking/ear flapping that I am concerned about, plus her confusion and not being able to find her way. The worrywart side of me worries that something might be in her brain, another side of me says maybe she wasn't 100% blind before and now she is and maybe things will improve in a few days. Or perhaps the pressure is up in her one eye from her glaucoma... I know the pressure can drive her bananas. So I am trying to figure out what to do. Go to the regular vet to see if it is an ear infection? Go to the opthamologist to see if her eye pressure is up? Or go to the oncologist to see if the cancer has spread to her brain? I am so financially drained I can't possibly do all 3.
Any advice or ideas? I am just stumped.

You've been gone for several days, is it possible this is her way to get your attention? Trouble makes a horrible whiney-moany noise when she wants me to drop what I am doing and pet her. (Yes, I know she is spoiled - no lectures, please!)

Well, I was thinking that, but she started doing it before I left. Of course my husband and son are not as attentive, so they didn't notice anything while I was gone. But they have no clue, they really don't pay attention and watch her as closely as I do.

Oh geeze, Tazzie, you really threw me for a loop. I thought YAY, here was Pam, but then I forgot Pam was TazzieDog, not Tazzie. HA HA! I know I am a freak when it comes to Nova's health. But it is starting to seem that the quality of life is diminishing, and I am so upset. I don't want to force her to go on for me if she is suffering, but then I am not sure she is suffering. And is certainly appears that the cancer has not spread, at least to the lungs. But then I have the glaucoma and blindness throwing a wrench in there, so it makes it so hard to figure out what the problem is. ARGH.

Oh poor baby Nova!
I'm just throwing this out there...but it does sound like an ear infection. Comet was acting so weird when she had clumps of hair in her ears. She didn't shake her head but she was stumbling and acting very out of sorts. They had to spend 30 minutes getting small hair clumps out of her ears. I guess they just fall in sometimes.
I know when I had an ear infection once - it was too painful to stand.
Try hard not to jump to an conclusions until a vet sees her.
Sending you big hugs!

Nova and Sue,
We really can not do much more than voice our support. I do not think that this is just a way to get attention - the standing and whining perhaps, but not the failure to find the water dish. My first thought was a possible ear infection, but I really do not see how that would contribute to the confusion. Pressure on the eye would be my logical choice, but as I started - we really can not do much more than voice our support.
Please keep us informed.

We're hoping Pam might check in with her professional opinion, but perhaps you could PM tazziedog to let her know you started this topic. We believe Wyatt shakes his head like that whenever he is confused, which is pretty often. Best wishes to you and Nova. Please keep us posted on the Queen's condition.

Oh Nova, why must you keep scaring your mom? Sigh...what are we going to do with you? Like others have said, the shaking the head thing seems to point towards an inner ear ordeal. I think I'm getting over the same cough Nova had (seriously, my mom took me to the doctor to see if Jack's cancer had spread to MY lungs), and the past couple days my inner ears have been itchy itcherson. If it IS an inner ear issue, her equilibrium may be off, which is why she seems confused. I don't know, but the poor thing could just be dizzy! Just my opinion 🙂

Do you think Nova is hearing well?? I mean, if she has an ear infection, she may not hear anything right now. That's waht happened to Oslo a couple of months ago. He is not blind and he looked pretty confused. He was not confident anymore and was always waiting for us to guide him. Nova's whining+shaking head+ confusion reminds me a lot of Oslo'a acting at that time. Of course, we can not know for sure. But it could be only that. If Nova is 100% she must have being using sounds to guide her. Let say she's is not hearing the sounds she is used to, that is enough to make her losing her confidence.
I did want to add something I learned from the vet about brain cancer symptoms when I thought Comet may have it (when her face was paralyzed from Horner's)
The symptoms the vet said to look for was neurological dysfunction in the limbs. You can test it yourself at home. While she is standing, turn her paw upside down toward the floor. If the reaction is quick to put the paw in its natural position, then the neuro function is good.

Dear Queenie. I tried to make sure you knew exactly which Tazzie was speaking with my "other Tazzie" clue, but will be more forceful next time (this here is not the smart and famous Dr. Pam of TAZZIEDOG fame - black stoic face - mastiff)! Just wanted to express my sympathies since you just got past that last hurdle.
But what is life with a tripawd if there is no hurdle to jump? That is exactly what those three legs are for, I suppose.
I just popped in here to check on the tripawds, so I apologize, but it sounds like an ear infection to me as well. Zoe would often get ear infections after being on antibiotics, mostly yeast. I could smell her ears and tell sometimes, but I would try to clean her ears and if you see brown stuff thats usually yeast. I hope this helps and I hope Nova gets feeling better soon.
I don't have a clue, but just wanted to let you know we're thinking of Nova and hoping you and she can resolve this.
Sending lots and lots of hugs and warm, healing thoughts...
