Hi, my dog Lola is 4 weeks post surgery and has fluid seeping from amputation site.  This is her 4th week on antibiotics, and she now has a pressure bandage.  She is starting to get a bit aggresive and unhappy, she is due to be reviewed again tomorrow, but I am really worried about her.  Has anyone got any similar experiences? x

Hi Lola, welcome to Tripawds. How come you lost your leg?

Well, I'm not a vet but four weeks post-op seems like it's too long of a time for this to be a seroma (harmless post-op fluid build-up). Have you checked the incision area for foul odors, redness or icky discharge? What does the fluid look like? How come she has been on antibiotics for so long? Most dogs are only on them about 10 days after surgery.

I'm glad you're seeing the vet tomorrow. Try not to worry, I'm sure it's something easily cured.

We're glad you found us, and look forward to hearing more about your pack.

Thank you for your reply, sometimes it feels a bit lonely out here.  Bit of a long story how she lost her leg, in a nutshell she jumped from a high shefl and broke her leg as a puppy.  Unfortuately the vet thought it was not broken.  By the time they xrayed ( 2 weeks later) the leg had reset.  This was four years ago.  Sh developed arthristis and was in an awful lot of pain, eventually having her leg removed 4 weeks ago.  The vet has said they may have to operate again to tighten the skin around the site and re stitch.  I agree, four weeks is such a long time and all her human family are so worried.xxx

4 week is a long time to still have seroma fluid. Did she have to have a drain post-op?  How much fluid is being produced?  It is possible that she is having a suture reaction (there are many sutures deep in the muscle layers that may not be breaking down properly).  Sometimes a second surgery is needed.

We had good news today, the fluid has reduced considerably.  The vet is hopeful that if we keep her quiet until her review Friday, she will be able to have her staples out then, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.  Thank you for your reply x

That's great news! Paws crossed that Friday she can get the staples on and move on with her life.

What a story about her breaking her leg. Ouch!

I know, she is about as far away from a regular dog as you could imagine (stealing presents from under the christmas tree, flying through the dog flap into the garden to hide them), same with underwear, socks, other dogs toys or pretty much anything she can get her paws on!

Still we love her, keeping her quiet is a bit of a task but we do our best.  Will see what friday brings!
