I should know by now that a vet appointment with Boo, no matter how "routine", will never be "normal".
Last week I took Boo into our vet for her annual shots/heartworm/kidney&thyroid checks... When I walked in the door the head Vet came into our room and said "I'm so glad you're here, I was going to call you"! Long story short, he was talking to friend of his, former Vet now a Researcher at the VanAndel Institute, about a study she is doing regarding Canine Cancers, especially Osteosarcoma. They have been doing DNA mapping and they believe they have found the DNA marker for Osteosarcoma. They are currently collecting blood and tumor samples to further study these patterns they have discovered. Since we never really got a good diagnosis for Boo (some vets think she does have osteosarcoma, while others do not...weird eh') my vet thought Boo would be perfect for this study! He made a phone call while we were getting the other stuff taken care of and 20 minutes later - a person was on there way to our vet to check out Boo, get blood samples, and have us sign release forms! WOOHOOO! PROGRESS! I am so thrilled that Boo was able to participate in this cutting-edge research!
The researchers are very eager to get more blood and tumor samples! Van Andel Institute is located in West Michigan, but they are participating with multiple institutions across the US. For more info send an email to; chcc@vai.org .
(* Boo became a tripawd 5 months ago today! So long ago...and yet somedays it feels like it was just last week! We still get an occasional yelp! but other than that, you'd never know. She loves to run...and run....and eat, and nap...and run)!
Boo became a Tripawd Warrior Princess on Sept 8, 2009. She crossed over the Rainbow Bridge 2.7 years later on April 29, 2012. Run free Angel Boo!
Trouble sent a blood sample in last week. I'm glad you decided to contribute. It is a very personal choice.
Congrats on the 5 months. That is a great time...healing is done, chemo done, just happy times. Hope you and Boo have many more ampuversaries ahead.

Congratulations on Boo's 5 month ampuversary... I really hope that boo's blood and tissue samples are going to help one day find a cure, or a personalized treatment for osteosarcoma!! We are doing the same thing at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, for human cancer... Maybe one day...
