Thanks so much Pam! Between the stress and sleep deprivation, my memory went kinda blank on what to do for diarrhea. I actually just finished giving him some canned pumpkin (no added sugar) that I went out and bought because Jim and Rene were able to jog my memory on that little trick over the chat. Yay team! Tomorrow I will have chicken defrosted, so we'll try the bland food route too. My folks agreed to check on him mid-day Tuesday and Wednesday (and give him meds now probably), so it'll sure be good to have it cleared up before then, so they don't regret offering to help, heh heh.

No Immodium with Tramadol, that's interesting. I better file that away in my memory somewhere.

Also, I really really appreciated the reassurance that giving him more Tramadol has been the right call. Gosh, you had so many posts to read through too! Double thanks!! Or, because this is Tripawds after all, triple thanks!!! (One for each leg). Oh boy, now I'm getting loopy and I'm not the one on Tramadol.

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com

I would not use Immodium in combo with Tramadol.

Wow Pam, we had no idea, thank you so much for that info! We'll file that away with our tags here.

You rock!

Hi GerrysFosterMom, Angus was on Rimadyl (100mg) and Tramadol (50mg) after his amputation. The Rimadyl made him depressed and he didn't want to eat half the time. I was making special foods that were his favorite so he would eat most of the time, just to get him to take his medicine, otherwise I would never get any food into him. The Tramadol always made him pant a LOT right after I gave it to him (and he was taking that 2-3x per day for pain or as needed) and very constipated. He would go out and pee but never wanted to have a bowel movement. So when I told the doctor this, she had me take him off of both meds because she didn't think he was in pain anymore and he finally had a bowel movement (but not before I put a couple of teaspoons of canned pumpkin in his food-a suggestion from the vet), and was eating his regular food and no more panting.

my dog is having same issues...how is your dog now Gerry? My dog had surgery 2 days ago. She is on tramadol and has been shaking and panting a lot. I feel like it may be from the Tramadol so I want to take her off it but then I think what if it's the pain causing this. I don't know what to do... I feel like I'm overdosing my dog and making it worse for her.... She is a 55lb Victorian bulldog and takes 2 - 50mg pills every 8-12 hours.... Thoughts or suggestions? She is really shaking a lot, looks like muscle tremors...any replies would be helpful...thanks!

Hi Jen!

Sorry you have to be here but, under the circumstances there is no better place to be!

Recovery is NO picnic, that's for sure! This is major surgery and it hurts! And the crazy part is, pain symptons can look exactly like side effects from pain meds! I'm certainly no vet and certainly discuss any doseage changes with him. .any dogs here are on GABAPENTIN, TRAMADOL AND RIMADYL. So it very likely is lain. Again, I'm no vet.

A suggestion to discuss with your vet is to lerhaps .ake the dose every 6 to 8 hrs. ...an/or add Gabalentin to the mix. At two days, the hospital meds are working their way out of her system too. If the pain gets a head start, it's harder to bring it under control. You'll be able to slowly reduce the lain meds, but I don't think your vet would want you to yet.

It does get better!! The first two weeks can be pretty rough! Heck, humans would still be in the hospital on a morphine drip!! My Happy Hannah paced and whined and dint even lay down for the first 19 hours!! I think I probably slept five hours the first three days...total!!

But when her sparkle started coming back..and it seemed like forever......ohhhhh my goodness we had THE best time!!!!

Take some deep breaths.....and eat lots and lots of chocolates...and stay connected to us!! We are right here with you! This community got me through the hurdles!!

Tell us more about your pup when you can. And we love photos around here!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
