Thank you so much for sharing that post.

Amen to that.! I know for us and Bonzai in the end the decisions we make are soo much easier now that we base them on WHO he is not WHAT he has. Who he is is a fighter who loves life and us and the sun and walks and hamburgers. lol

I thought that was a good statement also.  I also based all my decisions on who Sassy was.  I had gone to a seminar by a natural path vet and she said don't let the disease define your animal.  "Dont say I have a cancer dog.  Say I have a dog who has cancer."  Which is true the 1st way defines your dog the 2nd doesn't.

Good article Michelle.

Nope, Sassy isn't defined by that pirce of crap disease in anyway! You ALWAYS stayed true to your Sassy...always let her be Sassy. When n it became clear her "Sassyness" was being compromised, your decisions were based on that...not the disease.

Great article Michelle, it's fine to post that here. I am always shocked when a member comes here and says their vet instantly recommends death without discussing palliative care or chemo. These vets should give up their license, our animals deserve so much better.

Michelle, thank you SO much for posting that article.  Our decision to let Libby go falls under the articles heading "Less Clear, But No Shame......"Paralysis makes the simplest act, like standing to eliminate, impossible......That’s especially true in animals you’ve known to be extremely clean in habit, or who would never, ever, even with a bursting bladder, eliminate in the house. How must they feel now?"  I used to post about Libby's secondary cancer (bladder cancer) and how she would be mortified to ever pee in the house.  This article has has brought me some comfort during what is still a painful journey.

The day we were given Libby's diagnosis, our vet told us about an oncologist that brought his chocolate lab in for our vet to xray.  The lab had OSA and the oncologist had him put to sleep that very day.  I was taken aback by that, but more so now, having traveled the journey with Libby and cherishing each additional day we had with her, post amp. I wouldn't change a thing.

Hugs,

Amy & Spirit Libby

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Hi Sweet Amy!

ALWAYS good to hear from you! Yeah, I think this article had sooo many great points and I'm really glad it brought yoj some comfort.

And, I'm absolutely asounded at the Onco. who put the dog "down" at the very mention of the disease.

Yeah, those "bonus days" are priceless.

I am glad this article is helping a lot of people.  There was a few in there that helped me the one about being restless and not able to rest a few hours at a time that was Sassy the last day of her life.

The comment about putting the dog down right way bothered me but i guess that is what some people do and that makes me sad.  I didn't want to lose my girl so we were going to fight.

What a great post...   it is so hard..  George had to have TPLO a week ago..  when they told us how much it would cost.. we really got a fright..  we had just paid so much to have his amputation..  but..  when we looked at him.. he had so much life.. we just could not, not have it done... but it did bring home to us.. that some day.. we would be in the same situation and have to make that decision....  but at the time..  I just thought not today..  to me...  if they are happy..  not in pain..  then ..  that step is not needed right then..

Thanks so much for sharing that article.  I count myself lucky that Panzer's primary care vet, surgeon, and oncologist are all so caring, engaged, and compassionate with respect to Panzer's diagnosis, treatment, and overall well-being.  They're incredibly accessible and are willing to spend time talking through options whether it's at the office, on the phone, or via email.  It's also clear that they adore the pup.  Heck, I was on the phone with Panzer's surgeon the night before his amputation, and the surgeon told me he that he loves Panzer (this guy has treated Panzer for years since Panzer has managed to tear both ACLs a few years apart). Especially after reading about how the vet experience could be, it is so gratifying to get the sense that these vets are treating my dog as much as they are treating the disease.
