It wasn’t long after Daisy left her physical body that my husband and I started talking about adopting another yellow lab. It wasn’t to replace her; Daisy is irreplaceable, as all our pets are. Many of you know how heartbroken I’ve been and how much love I have for her. However, because my husband and I are both retired, we have lots of time, energy, and the love to give to another sweet dog. So we went looking—online.
Sunny was originally in a pound, having been turned in as a stray. No one claimed her, which is unbelievable to me, but I’m told it happens a lot. A rescue group took her and found a foster home for her. She was there several weeks because not many people want to adopt an older dog. (The vet guessed her to be 8 with the spirit and energy of a 3 yr old.) Who knows? Perhaps Sunny was just waiting for us to come get her. As you know if you’ve read my blog about Daisy, I adopted her when she was 10, so Sunny was the general age we were looking for. We found Sunny on Craig’s List where the rescue organization had the posting. The organization named her Sunny, and she seems to know it so we decided to keep it.
She’s about 99.9% yellow lab with possibly some sheltie in there. Her feet are white-ish, and there’s white at the tip of her tail. She’s a little smaller than Daisy. Because she’s a lab, she has similarities to Daisy, but she’s definitely her own dog! She has a little bit of OBD (obsessive ball disorder), but we see that as a fun trait. She’s a little bit stubborn (whereas Daisy was very mellow), but that’s OK too. Someone in her early years took the time to train her, as she knows many commands but is just a little rusty. Perhaps she hunted, for when she loses sight of the ball she tracks it and always finds it, even when it’s thrown over the roof of our cabin and ends up in the brush down by the water. She also has excellent indoor manners. In short, Sunny is a gem! It’s been interesting to notice that I don’t have that immediate bond with her that I had with Daisy, and yet I’m really enjoying her. For the first time since I had my German shepherd in 1986, I have a dog who knows how to heel, and it’s so fun to take her for walks!
Daisy, 12 years young, had left forelimb amp on 5/19/2010 due to osteosarcoma. She left her body behind and joined the other spirit tripawds on 7/16/2010.
So grateful for each day with her!
Lexi (Daisy's momma)
OH MY DAWGIE DAWG!
I love her already! Look at Sunny!
I'd take bets that your instant bond is there but you are just not quite ready to acknowledge it! You are beaming about her as you should be!
I'm so happy for your and your husband!
P.S. I read somewhere that 70% of dogs don't get claimed. It's probably higher now in this economy.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Awe, congratulations! I am so thrilled that you choose senior shelter dogs. That is just too wonderful. They, and the special needs (another soft spot of mine) are so often overlooked for adoption.
Many happy days ahead for you and Sunny - I can just feel it!

Congratulations on adding Sunny to your family. She is beautiful. What a wonderful thing you did by choosing her, so many people over look an older dog, how wonderfulthat you picked one. She will never replace Daisy but she will help to to help fill that big hole in your heart.
I am so happy for all of you, enjoy your new beautiful new girl.

Tasha lost her battle and became my Angel on May 4 2011. Forever in my heart….
You really how to put a smile on Dad's face, but then how could anyone not smile at such a great story and a face like Sunny's. You are very special to adopt a more senior companion and Sunny truely is lucky to find such warm giving hearts. Dad fully understands about not replacing Daisy for he often says that I could allow him to remember "The Girls" with a smile. This was true whenever I would do something similar to them, but I made my own memories with him.
Spirit Cherry
PS from Dad: I was truely blessed with all my Standard Poodles and they each carved out a very special place in my soul. I have to say that Miss Cherry was definately the best at healing and was a natural right from the start. Walks are so very much fun when they are well behaved. I am sure that there will be many walks in Sunny's future. You really did show the depth of your heart by bringing Sunny to a "new" home.
Sunny is beautiful! Congratulations on the new addition to your family.

I think that you are the lovely person who sent us a PM offering the harness (which we already had) - I am so happy to see you have a new addition! Congratulations! I have never understood why anyone ever suggests that an owner who has lost a dog is "replacing" hin or her - of course every one of our wonderful friends is irreplaceable, and of course we have room to love a new furry one ...
Oh, Sunny is lovely, lovely, lovely! And so are you for welcoming an older companion into your home. So happy for all of you!

Heh heh - OBD! My roommate's dog has that. You can see his pupils dilate when you show him the tennis ball.
Congrats on the new addition!
And Sunny, you made a great pick!!!
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com
She's beautiful. I think you're both lucky to have found each other. All the best....

"Going Dog" def: living every day in the moment
"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."

Congratulations! Sunny is adorable. I can tell already that you are perfect for each other! See, sometimes relationships that star online really do work out
Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end. On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.
