Aha! I figured it out .... Jasper feels like a 'dog' to me where Shelby had such a big personality that she felt like a real member of the family (one that I wanted to photograph and give a proper birthday party, etc). Shelby was my child. Jasper is my pet.Â
I don't know if that makes it better or worse but it makes sense to me somewhat. We had "pets" growing up and what I feel for Jasper is akin to that... a dog that is cute and fun to have around but nothing makes me want to rush home to her, or take her places or have a million adventures. We might get there and don't get my wrong, she is getting out and about for long walks, to the pet store, etc... but as far as a weekend get-away, not feeling like it.Â
Maybe that will change! Ahhh life, definitely a journey not a destination!Â

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Jasper Lily channeling her inner "Shelby" .... Yup - those are my stinky/damp workout clothes from Sunday's three-hour spin. I had put them on the shower to dry and tossed them on the floor yesterday morning before I showered and look what I saw?!? Vile beast. Shelby used to do that too. 🙂Â
Â
So Jasper and I had a pretty decent Monday. She was 100% crate trained and friendly when I got her. She loved the crate which was perfect since I don't trust her on her own in my apt. Well yesterday, I put her in the crate (she went in freely) and boom - getting in my car, I heard crying. I think she stopped. I didn't even say goodbye or anything to her. It's easy to do since I'm not that bonded so I don't even think about it. It's more like a transactional thing. Got home, she was quiet and fine. And if I do NOT speak to her and simply open the door and get her outside and down the apt stairs (w/out her leash but she won't dash off), then she doesn't pee in the apt submissively. She wants to greet me for sure but if I greet her back, she tinkles! So I don't speak to her until she is on the grass. So hard. But she did that back kick thing after she pooped.Â
I am learning, I think, that she might not pee as often as Shelby and I shouldn't get angry if she doesn't do her business before bed... She went in to my sock drawer this a.m. and pulled out a pair to chew on while I was in the shower. Never mind she has about 20 toys of her own!Â
Still don't love her. But feeling a bit less guilty. Everyone adores her. Thinks she is the cutest thing in the world. (Those ears are hilarious how she moves them). I am seeing more of her personality ... she's trying and honestly, so am I. XO tripawd family... thank you for the support!Â

LOL Lucy does the back kick after she poops too! Funny to watch. She also stands on 3 legs to pee. My socks are not safe either, although she is so short , if they are not on the floor, she can't get to them. So happy to hear that it is going better for you. she is so fortunate to have you. love from Lori and Ty
