Sooooo, this is what sweet, gentle, innocent little Merry Myrt l e looked like Monday night after a four hour ER visit...

And then Tuesda morning!!!!

2014-07-29-20.06.54_zpsqmwbmb1g.jpgImage Enlarger

Yeah, we were outside playing, she starts meandering around in the field.....ever hear a peep. She starts heading my way...all the sudden acting very tired...drooling like crazy...I'm thinking she's had too much deer poop and is trying to puke...to make room for more! Ewwww....anyway, within a matter of minutes I'm realizing this isn't good...thi n king she's eating something poisonous. Of c o urse, it's 7:30..regular vet's closed

Poor thing is whining, pacing, eyes closing, pawing me non stop to help her. At this point, I see n o swelling anywhere and I'm panicked that she ate some poisonous weed....ER is 45 minutes away...get her to car...she lays down on ground very weak...sweating bullets trying to get that sweet hunk of love iin car!
By the tie we getto ER...yeah...her muzzle is swelling!

Snake bite!!! TWO bites!! (Most likely a Cooperhead..very venomous.) Merry Myrtle went back for seconds! Making Happy Hannah proud!

Sooooo, Tramadol, anibiotics, fluids and finally tonight she's showing a lot of improvement!!clap Swelling is starting to go down...she has a huge turkey neck though...and she's feeling perkier!!!

WHEEEEW! Was sooooo scared for her! And she is just so cuddly.and wants nothing more than to be right by my side...which is fine with me!!!!

Had to dip her head in a gallon of ice cream to keep swelling downway-cool

YAAAAAAAAY. MERRY MYRTLEclap

Phew!

Glad to hear that Merry Myrtle is recovering nicely from her recent snake encounter.  Poor baby!

Clearly Happy Hannah was looking out for her :)

Give her some snuggles for us - oh and a smooch on her swollen face.

Oh my........poor Merry Myrtle.......I do hope she is recovering ok, just never know with snakebites, but at least a Copperhead is less venomous than a Water Moccasin or the Rattlesnakes we have in our area......and yes, I know Happy Hannah had her paws of protection on miss Merry Myrtle, please give her a kiss on the nose from me.....And YAY for ice cream.......!!

I will keep you and her in my thoughts today.....

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Myrtle, Myrtle, Myrtle! What are we going to do with you? You look soooo pathetic. Is your mom going to have to take you to snake avoidance class? Or did you learn your lesson the first time?

So glad there was a happy outcome.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Glad to hear Myrtle is on the mend!  Hannah sure did look out for her!!

OH NO! Holy moly I was so scared reading this!

Myrtle Myrtle Myrtle, you crazy girl, I'm so glad you're OK and feeling better. That had to have hurt soooooo much.

Sally, good thing you were home. Sorry it happened at night (of course!). Yeah, snake avoidance classes are worth it, even one will keep a dog from messing with them.

Poor Myrtle! That deserves a LOT of ice cream!

How scary!
We have rattlers out here but luckily they are rare in town. I was always careful when I took the pugs to the hills around here, I think they would be curious if they saw a snake and get to close.

I like the ice cream therapy! Glad M. Myrtle is on the mend.

OH MY Gosh.  HOLY HELL Mrytle.  Please stay away from snakes.  Good thing you were paying attention Sally.  The things our babies get into.  She is looking better than that 1st day.  So what did they do give her anti venom or fluids or something?

I hope you hugged her a bunch

Hugs & lots of love

Oh no.  Sally, I have been there.  Honest.  A number of years ago, Brendol and Aissa were playing in the yard and started barking.  When I looked their direction, I could tell it was probably a snake.  They had had their occasions to find gardner snakes.  I started heading their direction, and then I saw the snake strike.  At that point, I knew it wasn't a simple little gardner snake.  So I grabbed a long stick on my way and when I got to them, sure enough, there was a 2 foot copperhead ticked as all get out.  Meanwhile, Aissa grabs the thing and is thrashing it about.  Once she dropped it, I figured yay, dead snake.  Then it moved.  Crud.  To speed through this, I finally managed to get both girls to the house and the snake out of the yard.  Then found a second copperhead only a few feet away.  That one got removed as well.  Back in the house, I did a pat down on both girls and neither one acted funny or hurt.  I figured drama averted.  Within the next hour, Brendol was panting more and more and drooling and acting sluggish.  I did another pat down and this time she yelped when I was near the side of her mouth.  whatever  Like you, it was now like 9pm on a Friday.  Off to the ER we go.  They said they only saw a puncture at the side of her mouth, gave her steroids and antibiotics and sent us home with a protocol of benadryl.  Once home, it turned out she also had gotten bit near her armpit.  The entire side of her ribs turned black that night and she was in so much pain she wouldn't sit or lay down.  She stood ALL night long, which means I sat next to her, awake, all night long.  Very first thing once morning came, I took her to our regular vet and insisted on pain meds.  They only gave us rimadyl, but it did help.  She was finally able to lay down and get some rest.  Her ribs healed pretty quickly, but the bite at her mouth had turned black and ended up leaving a scar about an inch long and a quarter inch wide.

Stupid snakes.

SOOOOO, after all that.... Miss Myrtle May!  You leave those snakes alone.  They are not toys and no bueno.  Glad you are feeling better little girl.

Thank you everybody! I read all your responses to Myrtle and she felt the love!

Wednesday night....acting fine, still alittle swelling but not much...stil l has more antibiotics to take.

KARMA!!!! OMD!! BRENDOL AND AISSA are quite the snake wranglers! TWO!!! You had TWO. Copperheads! YIKES!!! They are sooooo aggressive! It's a wonder they didn't come after you!!!

I was on my riding lawnmower and came u p on one, drove by him and he chased me!!!

Poor Brendol!! Myrtle's ER sent her home with Tramadol and gave her an injection for pain at the visit. And she was whining and crying for several hours anyway! Can't believe they didn't give her pain meds! But kudos to y o u for going and getting some later!

Myrtle had two bites, but they were both on er cheek.. FOR Brendol to have two bites so far apart...her whole body must have really received a double whammy! And they didn't give.her a strong pain med! A**h***s!!! That Brendol, one strong little girl!!!superstar

You're a good mom Karma!!!
