Flooding disaster in Queensland Australia

Hi all,

I don't know if anyone gets any international news but Queensland in Australia has been copping some pretty bad and disasterous flooding.  It has been happening for a week now and it has affected places around Bundaberg (where my parents live and work, thankfully they are ok and so is there property but many others were so unlucky) and places around there last week.  Yesterday hit us fairly full on but we haven't flooded yet.  My aunt was flooded in (25 minutes away) where she lives but thankfully it was due to the low lying roads going under and she was safe in her home, she just couldn't get anywhere due to the roads... 10 people confirmed dead and another 60+ missing...

Scary part is it seems the worst is yet to come and they are predicting it is going to be worse than the disasterous 1974 floods.  Toowoomba was hit by an inland tsunami yesterday afternoon where a wall of water hit the town without warning and created a mass of devistation.  http://au.news......-isolated/

They are evacuating people and some areas are evacuating pets too.  Made me think about the fact that I don't think I could leave Koda.  They are having to chopper people out on Black Hawks.  I have played it over in my mind if I had to evacuate there is no way I would leave Koda and they would have to accept him because he has a disability and there is no way he would survive flood water as he can't swim being a tripawd...  Thank goodness though as I highly doubt that we will be hit with flood waters due to our location.  I was jokinbg to my husband that I would go as far as saying I was blind and he was my guide dog (he is a yellow lab). I know it is not good to joke but there is no way I could leave him and feel for those people who have had to leave their animals.  News today even showed people sitting on their roof tops waiting to be rescued with their dogs sitting with them!!!  People are evacuating with dogs under their arms and cats in cages, it is heart breaking as it is all within a 2 hour radius of us and as close as 25 minutes up the road!!!

We are on a peninsula so the water that hits us makes its way to the ocean pretty quick and we are only connected with a bit of land so it would be a shock if much water travelled across that to us. Oh and as if we needed more problems we are at threat tomorrow and Thursday for when a King tide hits so they are expecting that to create and add to the havoc!

The main part of Brisbane (capital of QLD) is under major threat as all of the rain coming from Toowoomba and other areas East is making its way down and they think the Brisbane river will have its highest peak ever which will affect thousands of homessad People were sent home from work palces in the CBD in Brisbane today and they are on high alert all night!!!!  They think tomorrow and Thursday are going to be worse for Brisbane and Ipswich residents.  They are cutting power to the major city tomorrow morning... Scary stuff!!!!

Well I just wanted to post and ask you all to keep Queenslanders in your thoughts and prayers.  This has been going on for a week now and is getting depressing.  People just want to see sunshine!!!  We have been in drought for approx the last 10 years so I guess the drought is officially broken!!!  If the media and experts are over reacting then at least we are prepared for the worst...

I'll keep everyone posted...

How devastating!  I've heard a little about what's going on.  But it always feels different when you hear a first hand account.  I'm so thankful you and your family are safe.  And I don't blame you!  You come up with any lie you have to if it will keep your Koda safe!   The pain of having to leave a pet behind would be horrible.  I'm not sure how they expect people to cope with that.

You'll all be in my thoughts.  I pray it subsides sooner than expected and the media is just overreacting.

Wow! I knew there was major flooding, but that video with the cars being swept away and ending up in a pile was amazing.  I'll be hoping an praying for everyone's safety and that the sun comes very soon.

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

Hey Storm and Koda

yes, of course, we have heard about the enormous floods, but most the Ausie's I know seem to be in other parts of the continent. Hadn't thought about you guys or the pets (apart from livestock they talked about feeding on a radio show).

That would be scary.

Amazing Koda is still hopping along!!  Good for him!!  I think you had the amp the same week if not the very same day as my Tazzie. It sounds as though Koda must be doing well, from the omission of anything that says otherwise.

Stay high and dry!

We saw the news here and thought of you and Koda.  We will continue to pray for your safety and well-being.  If I were in your situation, I would totally do the "guide dog" thing! LOL  There is no way I would leave my pup either.

Keep safe and know we are thinking of you!

Well today saw a lot more homes go under, thankfully it is happening slowly so no extra loss of human life today.  There was sunshine out but the flood waters slowly took over.  Images of livestock and horses on the tv.  Horses were swimming with their chins resting on tin rooves of houses...

Thanks for your support, now there is the ripple on effect of the grocery stores running out of milk, bread, water, fruit and veges...  I hope they fix that soon and then concerns of tap water as the pumps have been effected.  I think where we get our water from is ok so that is good!!!

@ Susan - Koda celebrates his 1.5 year ampuversary on Sunday 16/1/11.  He was diagnosed on 8/7/09 and hasd surgery 16/7/09.  He has been doing pretty well.  He has started the choking thing but I am not allowing it to stress either of us as he is still coping ok.  He only does it occassionally and the vet did say he actually may just be clearing his throat...  He gets cydax injection each month for his arthritis in his back legs.  He turned 9 on Christmas Eve 🙂  I will post more about birthday celebrations that evening...  We are so happy to have our boy another summer, mind you we haven't been swimming much due to the weather!!!

Write again soon,

Storm and Koda:)
