Here's a good article that should ease some of our worries over whether or not pets can get coronavirus.ย

Coronavirus update: Pets are safe . . . but wash your hands

Reports that a dog in Hong Kong repeatedly tested โ€œweak positiveโ€ for the COVID-19 virus fueled worldwide concern that pets could indeed get the new superbug. While that concern appears to be groundless (at least so far), it does raise a question.

Why did the dog test positive, however weakly? One theory is that while the virus may have been present on the dog, the dog did not actually have the virus. Scientists know that coronaviruses can live on surfaces and objects, although not for how long.

So wash your hands.

That advice comes courtesy of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is doing its best to allay the fears of pet owners by stating on its website that, โ€œAt present, there is no evidence that companion animals/pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus.โ€ย  ย

So... there is a new CDC update for anybody interested.ย  If a person is quarantined for COVID-19, they recommend as little to no contact as possible with not only family members, but pets included.ย ย

Matter of fact at this point they are advising if you have another family member to care for the pet,ย  please do so.ย ย

The main reason for this is lack of knowledge.ย  So they are advising as little contact with all family as possible until they can gather more info.ย

If anybody is in need of more information regarding keeping families safe I would be happy to share.ย

Quickly and simply,ย  most Lysol and Clorox products such as wipes and sprays are effective in sanitizing areas.ย  I have spent much of my day researching this for my job. Safest distance to avoid airborn particulate is 6 feet or better.ย  Masks protect the people around them more than the person wearing the masks.ย ย

Wash,ย  wash,ย  wash your hands.ย  Keep your environment clean.ย  If you carry groceries in,ย  wash the table you put the bags on, then WASH YOUR HANDS!ย

Ok, I'm stepping off the platform now.ย  Just want everypawdy to be safe.ย  For some people this is common knowledge.ย  For other's it might be helpful.ย

I have to be in the middle of some of this stuff so if i can help all of you wonderful people,ย  I'm happy to.ย  If you make your own hand sanitizer be careful.ย  You have to have specific quantities for it to be effective. Bleach/ water ratios can be found HERE

You'll find other helpful info there. โค

Well things keep getting crazier folks. We just learned that the University of Wisconsin's School of Veterinary Medicine teaching hospital has been completely shut down. Just got this message:

As of this afternoon, March 13, because of the very rapidly changing COVID-19 situation, UW Veterinary Care is closed to all appointments, including emergencies. This unprecedented step is not one we take lightly; we are closing to protect the health of our clients, staff and students.

A university employee who works in the School of Veterinary Medicine building was diagnosed with novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). University officials are cooperating fully with Public Health Madison & Dane County and other public health officials. The employee recently traveled to a country with widespread transmission of coronavirus. This employee is currently isolated at home. Non-essential employees in the building have been directed to return home.ย

To keep our pets healthy and safe, it's important to stock at least a month's worth of food and prescriptions for them too. If this keeps happening, veterinary care could be difficult to access in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, they are also paying the price for this crazy virus with disruptions in their own health care. Ugh. Be safe and stay healthy everyone.

Thanks for sharing that article Jackie. A new one just came in from the American Animal Hospital Association, "COVID-19 and companion animals: Theyโ€™re probably safe . . . but keep washing your hands"

The summary:

NEWStat contacted Shelley Rankin, PhD, a professor of clinical microbiology and head of Diagnostic Services at University of Pennsylvania Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, and asked her about speculation that while the virus may have been present on the dog in Hong Kong (a new study says the virus can live on some surfaces for up to 72 hours), the dog did not actually have the virus.

Rankin doesnโ€™t give that line of thinking much credence: โ€œIf thereโ€™s no evidence of transmission to pets, then speculating about people getting infected from touching the surface of [an] animal is just thatโ€”pure speculation,โ€ Rankin said. โ€œIt is not based on any scientific evidence.โ€

That said, Rankin doesnโ€™t think the dog in Hong Kong should keep pet owners up at night, even if the jury is still out.

โ€œThe current understanding among the veterinary microbiology and epidemiology communities is that a single case in a dog is not good evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be transmitted from humans to animals,โ€ Rankin said. โ€œI have seen no reports of pet to human transmission from any sources.โ€

Great news! A Veterinary Practice News article that confirms companion animals are NOT COVID-19 carriers:

Thousands of specimens show no evidence of COVID-19 in pets
Evidence released by IDEXX Laboratories concurs with the conclusions of global health groups

Aligning with statements from multiple animal and human health-care groups, IDEXX Laboratories says there is no evidence companion animals have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans.

The veterinary diagnostics company says, to date, it has seen no positive results of the virus in the thousands of canine and feline specimens it has evaluated during validation of its new veterinary test system for COVID-19. The specimens were obtained from those submitted to IDEXX Reference Laboratories for PCR testing.

These results, IDEXX says, align with the current understanding that the virus is primarily transmitted person-to-person and supports the recommendation against testing pets for COVID-19. READ MORE

Distressing news, cats are getting covid-19 Big cats and now domestic cats. As stated in the previous articles posted, they are not the carriers.

They are getting sick from humans, not the other way around!ย

This has always been my concern if we humans get sick! With most of us here with an immune-compromised cat! If we get sick, we can give this to our cats!ย

I am pasting an email here from Jackson. Galaxy.

The CDC link is also below.

โ€‹https://www.cdc.....s-NYC.html

To Our Loyal Cat-Loving Family,

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, developments break that can be confusing - and sometimes unsettling. For animal lovers like yourself, that was the case yesterday when news broke that two domestic cats in New York State tested positive for the virus. The two cats (living in separate areas of the state), experienced mild respiratory symptoms and are expected to fully recover. In one case, the cat contracted the virus from a family member, and in the other, where the cat spent time outside, it was likely contracted from someone in the neighborhood.

We were first made aware of human-to-animal transmission of the virus a few weeks ago when a tiger at The Bronx Zoo became ill after coming into contact with an infected zookeeper. Knowing now that domestic animals can also contract the virus the same way is sad news - but not completely unexpected. Even though public health officials are still learning about COVID-19, what was apparent in the case of the big cats a few weeks ago holds true for the domestic cats today. In other words, there is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading the virus in the United States. Our animal family members can contract the virus from humans, but there is little to no risk of the opposite happening.ย ย

At the same time, itโ€™s important that we keep our animal family members safe from contracting this virus in the first place. Until we know more, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following:ย

  • Do not let pets interact with people or other animals outside the household.
  • Keep cats indoors when possible to prevent them from interacting with other animals or people.
  • Walk dogs on a leash, maintaining at least 6 feet from other people and animals.
  • Avoid dog parks or public places where a large number of people and dogs gather.

If you are sick with COVID-19 (either suspected or confirmed by a test), restrict contact with your animals, just like you would around other people.

  • When possible, have another member of your household care for your pets while you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food or bedding.
  • If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wear a cloth face covering and wash your hands before and after you interact with them.

For more information on this matter, please visit the CDC website below:

โ€‹https://www.cdc.....s-NYC.html

It is vitally important, in this time of so much uncertainty and fear, that we cling tightly to the science we are given and not the storylines we hear casually. Initial panic will cause many to surrender their companion animals to shelters or just let them go. It is up to us to tell each and every person we know to stay up to date with the facts, keep our wits about us, and not let this virus rob us of our empathy and compassion for all - whether they have two legs or four.ย

ย

With Light, Love & Mojo,

Jackson Galaxy

Stay safe and well, everyone!
