So I signed up to donate a sample of Henri's DNA for the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium but sadly the package just came in the mail today. I was hoping that in Henri's honor, someone would be kind enough to let me send the sample kit to them to help fight canine cancer. All you have to do is take a schwab of your dog's cheek.... The return mail is of course paid. Would someone be willing to do this? I can mail the kit out to you?
Thank you so much!
Wendy & Spirit Henri!!!
I thought about tossing this and I thought...NO WAY, this is MUCH too important to pass!
PLEASE HELP!
Oh Wendy, you are too sweet, what a very generous offer. Henri's spirit lives on....

wendy, what a kind thing for you to do. we got gayle's kit in the mail this weekend, and the swabs are already headed back to the researchers. wouldn't it be great to know our 'sisters and brothers' helped end this awful cancer monster once and for all!!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
Wendy,
We would be happy, and honored, to submit a DNA sample. We live in Canada so not sure if that's an issue or not?? Tai is a yellow lab, does the DNA have to come from a Golden?

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.
Thank you for your kind offer wendy! Henri would be proud.

I am so happy to see folks donate to the Consortium. We sent a blood sample for Trouble, prior to them taking the cheek swabs. I think it is a wonderful opportunity for us to help make a difference.
Wendy - you are awesome to offer your kit under the circumstance.

This is awesome! Holly sent in a blood sample before they were doing cheek swabs. I think anything we can do to help research so another family might not have to go through this awful disease is great!
Thanks, Wendy for posting this.
Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

After the mass in Denali is 100% confirmed, we plan on sending in a sample. We (Denali and I) really want to help the cause and supported it through 2 dogs 2000 miles BEFORE we ever even thought some day we'd have to deal with it.

I spoke with Dr. Froman today in Grand Rapids. She is the Sr Vet Research Scientist who is heading up the DNA collection and study. She is sending me all of the forms to requistion blood samples from my onco vet and the documentation to get the sample across the border. A bunch of extra requisitions are being sent along so that I can pass them onto my vet and she can enlist more donors. Thanks for the link ADMIN, anything we can do to help stop others from having to suffer this horrible disease is truly worthwhile.

Fortis got his cheeks swabbed today and the kit is in the mail. Thank you Wendy for allowing Fortis to donate his DNA to the Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium in the honor of Spirit Henri! I felt very lucky to be entrusted with such an honor.

I think this is a very worthy cause and the swab makes it so much simpler than the blood test that had to be next day air shipped back to them. The consortium paid all the cost to have it shipped, but there was some timing and coordinating that had to take place.

Definitely a worthwhile cause. We, actually, received our “thank you” card from them right after Harley died. I really do feel honored we were able to participate in the study. It is comforting knowing that someday, hopefully, some good may come out of all this heartache and pain.
Our instructions were a little different from what I am reading here. They just sent us an email with paperwork to be filled out and instructions on sending a blood sample (there were also instructions for sending a tumor sample, if the dog was going to be having surgery; we were never offered a swab option, but drawing blood wasn’t a big deal for us, since we were often running Harley’s CBCs, they just took an extra vial.). Our blood sample was to be shipped back “2day Standard FedEx,” with them providing their FedEx number. We, also, were to include the Histopath Report and other diagnostic documents.
The information we were given stated they were looking for dogs with the following cancer types:
- Hemangiosarcoma
- Osteosarcoma
- Lymphoma
- Malignant histiocytosis
- Melanoma (oral and digital)
This was just our experience with it; what we were told and asked for. Maybe it varies with the type of cancer or your location in relation to them??? Or, perhaps, they have completely changed their rules/regulations since we contributed. Anyway, it was pretty simple and straightforward. Definitely worth doing!
Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
