I saw this on another forum and wanted to share it with those who have lost their companion.  No author was noted.

Christmas Without My Dog

The tree is all trimmed.
The gifts are all wrapped.
The hymns are all sung,
And the travel plans mapped.

And still there's a sadness
That lies in my heart,
For a dog that was lost
And a love now apart.

A stocking is missing,
With toys and a treat.
A lap is now empty,
A space at your feet.

Yet remember this season
God's small gift to you,
Wonderful memories
To treasure life through.

Merry Christmas.

In your heart, where I belong.

Thanks, Kathy, for sharing that. I stuffed stockings tonight, including 2 for dogs. Because I'd bought something to put into Dakota's stocking, I went ahead and put his stocking out and put his present in it. Evelyn will end up with it, but it didn't feel right not to go ahead and go through the motions. I put out the stockings for our absent friends every year. They always hang with the family's and we talk about them. Personally, it helps us keep their memories alive. But it will be very strange this year not to have Dakota right in the middle of everything, supervising as he did.

Here is a picture of Dakota two years ago, about 6 weeks before he lost his leg. He is literally on top of my oldest son's feet as the poor kid tries to open gifts. To get any nearer, he'd have to be in his lap. I'm sure he tried that, too.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

Those holiday memories are the best.  If I did stockings for everyone, Trouble would surely have one even though she is no longer with us.  She lives in our hearts and always will.  She is always with us.

Today we are cooking a turkey, and it will never be the same with her gone.  She would lay in front of the oven from the time the bird went in the oven until it came out. Funny, funny, personable dog.

Shanna & Spirit Trouble ~ Trouble gained her wings 3/16/2011, a 27 1/2 month cancer survivor, tail wagging. RIP sweetheart, you are my heart and soul.  Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

The current pugs don't get into opening packages like Maggie did.  We tried again this year- Obie doesn't get opening but he did play with his toy for a few min, but I think he was humoring us smiley. Tani had no interest at all in her toy- she really didn't want to be awake!

We too reminisce each year about how much Maggie liked to open things- this is the third Christmas and now it brings all smiles. I did put a plastic golf ball under my tree at home- Mag's favorite toy.  And there is a black pug angel on the tree too.

Thinking of all of you who are having your first Christmas without your pups.
