Boy oh boy was it a warm one this weekend so since Jasper no longer fears the beach, we wandered down there for some sunshine. Now she is not 'technically' allowed on the beach in LA, she can walk on the bike path and I think even that was too hot for the little black dog. She was/is shedding up a storm right now (black dog fur is soooo much easier to spot than Shelby's fur ever was. And her dandruff seems to be back - even though a lot of her "itchies" have stopped now that we changed her food. She still manically licks at her paws after our walks though. Jasper is saying, "Madre it is tooo hot for me"....
So after the BRIEF (and I do mean BRIEF) walk .... since she kept heading back in the direction of home but she needed more energy burned out, I found a nice spot in the grass under some trees. She could enjoy the shade and I could enjoy the sunshine. And as soon as she saw a 'squirrel' - she was transfixed ... for 45 minutes - she sat like this:
Portrait of a dog - "hunting squirrels is very serious business"!
The poor little guy kept trying to come down the palm tree only to have her lunge (I had a tight grip on her leash). Not sure what she would do if she caught the squirrel but I would prefer to never find out. This is clearly how we will enjoy summers outside ... her sitting, staring at rodents and me, getting some sunshine, chillaxing. She was exhausted the rest of the day. I guess the mind stimulation was a lot of work for her.
PS - it was only 80 so not sure how she's going to handle 90+ at the beach but we'll get her fans and keep her inside. I think her coat is thicker than Shelby's was or I just worry more but she does pant so I know she is at least cooling herself off....
Stay warm east coast buddies!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Oh my, that picture of her staring at the squirrel needs to be framed. It is adorable! 80 degrees huh? It is like 24 here. A lot of snow, but at least we escaped the Blizzard. A walk on the beach sounds pretty good right about now. Thank you for sharing as we here in " Freezerland" can imagine ourselves there.
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Oh my Dog you are gonna make everyone outside of SoCal sooooo jealous with this update! Haha! But it's a good one, I love that pic of her too. Glad that she's turning into a beach bunny, she's gonna need that ocean this summer.
I think that dark fur absorbs sun and heat sooo much faster than light fur. Wyatt Ray overheats very easily compared to Jerry, we have to be super careful with him to.

Love the photos! She is one happy pup.
BTW, i was almost certain that I saw Jasper on TV last night. Have you seen the commercial with Carrie Underwood? The dog in it might just be Jasper Lily's long lost sister/brother. I don't even know what was being advertised, because I was so busy trying to get Garry's opinion on the dog. He agreed with me.
Kathi and Murphy
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
I love these pictures. It was a warm (for this time of year in Iowa) 57 degrees today. So the girls went outside again but muddy muddy for no snow or rain except a little Sat night. So there feet were muddy. Of course black dogs they didn't look too dirty after their baths but I am sure there was rolling in the straw that I throw down to keep them from getting too muddy.
I hope everyone on the East Coast stays safe & warm.
Hugs

Yes Kathi! I didn't even r realize I was "watching" tv at the moment...just sort of mindless staring I guess....then BAM....I see JASPER LILY! Like you...have no clue what the commercial was...didn't even know Underwood was in it...but Jasper Lily sure was! Cal l and get her Royalties Alison!
I sure am having beach envy looking at those pictures!! I'll try and get some pictures of the ice and snow here with downed lower lines, cars in ditches, power outages, etc. So you can have some "East Coast Winter envy"!
That licture of Jasler focused on the squirrel really is adorable! Mark it as a "favorite"!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I wouldn't trade the foot of snow we have coming for anything! I'm so excited to be snowed in tomorrow! Enjoy that gross heat, YUCK!! I've got five cats, a dog, and a fiance to keep me warm

Oh I would LOVE for a snow day! The most we get in LA is "rain days" and then staying at home is the only way to avoid idiots on the freeway... And as soon as I posted this yesterday, it started POURING in LA. Seriously psycho weather - and it seemed like LA wanted to "compete" with the east coast.
@ Kathi - I had to Google that commercial (I think it is for make-up) and YES!!! Saw Jasper's long lost sister or brother ... totally her face!!! Definitely Jasper could be in movies / commercials ... My friend, Jeff, who's a photographer got some great candid action shots of Jasper this weekend. I'll see if I can snag them off my FB page and share ... they are hilarious! Especially if you know how sweet & submissive JL is... she looks downright like Cujo!

So we didn't get the foot we were promised. The storm tracked further east and we only got 6 or 7 inches. Bummer. I still couldn't live anywhere there aren't four distinct seasons!!
I wish you guys could see the Tripawd I walk when she sees the snow. She's a Kommondor mix (cold weather herding dog) so she LOVES the snow! I opened the front door to her building today and she took off like a shot!! She gallops as best as a dog missing one of her hind legs can...so she has a funny gait to her. Oh it's so great! I can't get video because I'm too bundled up to use my phone!

Alison,
I just love reading about Jasper's adventures and seeing her adorable pics. Yeah, black coated dogs tend to get warm pretty quick out in the sun. Leland used to love going outside and getting some sun but after about 20 min he was wanting back inside with the a/c. During the spring when temps aren't too awful hot he'd be happy under a shade tree to get out of the direct sun but during the summer forget it...he definitely liked his a/c...lol!
And Jasper's focus on the squirrel is just amazing.
