Class #4 tonight focused on down and down-stay.
For the down-stay, he had trouble remembering to stay at first, but when the teacher dragged the package of hamburger past him, he was rock solid.
By next week he is supposed to maintain that down-stay while we drop the lead and walk the circle of dogs until we reach him again. That one is VERY scary for me!

It's so fun watching his pawgress! What is the name of the school/trainer you're working with?
I agree, walking around a circle of dogs while he's in a down stay would scare me too, not sure I'd be ready to try that with Wyatt. Just don't let Ollie know you're freaked out, and he'll do fine.

We are at Scotch Pines Dog Training in Nampa, Idaho. The instructor, April Stoppel Jantz, is the daughter of the original owners. She bought the business from them when they retired. I am VERY impressed with Ollie's progress. I can't wait until we are comfortable taking him to the beach. We both had to agree, though, that he was not ready for it this year.

I just realized that we had not posted a video from last week's lesson. We are just starting on the off-leash portion of the class. Ollie is tied to Garry's belt with a thin safety line, but Garry is not allowed to touch the line with his hands. Sometimes Ollie actually manages to do the command like the video shows. Sometimes it isn't so good...like when I got my foot tangled in the line yesterday and went down on my backside...a different version of the Granny Bump. As soon as I hit the ground, Ollie came over and sat down next to me.

These were from the last to or three weeks. We were working with distractions...an open package of hamburger was first. The next week it was a cage full of guinea pigs, and last week it was a goat. I do have to admit that the guinea pig one and the goat one were NOT on the first go around...several corrections were necessary before he managed to do it correctly.

The guinea pig...and then the GOAT!!! R U kidding!!!??? Not so much as a bark? Craaaaazy good dog!! Frankie smeeled the scent of the goat and guinea pig all the way through the screen and started howling like a wildman! Merry Myrtle only interested in the hamburger!
His attention to Garry and coming around to his side and sitting is astonishing!
But what I wouldn't give for a video of the new version of the Granny Bump! You know Murphy was laughing at that!

We have decided that Ollie is not as ready for off-leash at class as we would like him to be. The class area is not fenced, and he is still not trustworthy when he is off leash. We will be taking him to the dog park in Meridian ID (about 45 miles from here) on a regular basis to work on his skills, and he will finish the class with the January group. Hopefully by that time he will have settled in better and gained a bit more maturity. We also hope that he will have conquered his "run amok" tendencies. Although we wish that he was ready, we are not willing to take a chance on him at this stage of the game. Even though he is a big dog, he still has a huge case of "puppy brain".
We will try to post videos from his times at the dog park. He was great there yesterday when we took him.
