Black walnuts? Are they toxic? Are these like the ones you and I eat or a different variety?

Well, on the walnut issue, I was (and still am) a bit confused about it all. I've always been told that walnuts are toxic to dogs. However, once I started researching, after she ate 3, I found out that regular walnuts are bad for different reasons. Black walnuts are typically the wild variety that grows around these parts. Hundreds will fall from one tree and if they stay on the ground long, get wet, etc., they will mold. This is when they're the worst. They cause severe gastro problems and, in some cases, can kill.
This is what I found when Googling. She didn't show any symptoms of distress, so I'm taken it as a free pass and make sure they're picked up so she can't eat any more.
I even read about dogs that would play fetch with a walnut branch getting sick.
Who knew!?
