Jasper Lily's first earthquake and too many fireworks

Poor little Jasper Lily... such a rough weekend for her! First there were fireworks around our house Friday night to celebrate Marina del Rey turning 50. I knew in advance and thought I was prepared (thunder shirt on) but I should have given her a drug. Poor thing... they were SO loud and she was so scared. Ran under my bed and wouldn't come out for over 5 hours. I was convinced she was going to sleep under there in her thunder shirt. I tried to pull her out and she peed in her carrier .... at least she loves her carrier and that is her go to place when things make her uncomfortable.

Before and after

Then Sunday, we were chillaxing on the couch, after a long walk, relaxing weekend, lots of cuddle time ... and BOOM ... more f'ing fireworks! No warning. She took off and ran under the bed (no time to put her thunder shirt on her).

I coaxed her out w/cookies once the explosions stopped but she was still petrified. I have named these her "scared of everything" ears:

Image Enlarger

Once I took her photo and ran out of cookies, she took off again and I let her go. I figured if hiding makes her feel safe then there is no harm in it. I went to get ready for bed and couldn't find her anywhere ... I knew she was in the apt but she also has taken to hiding IN my closet which has NO room w/all the cr@p that is on the floor (shoes, vaccumn, etc)... so I found her in a basket .. where my drycleaning goes.

Right after I snapped this photo - 3.5 earthquake:

Image Enlarger

Did she know it was coming? did she sense it? Was she just laying flat to ride out the scary stuff that was happening? I noticed she wasn't under the bed and that was probably for the best ... it wasn't a big one but a jolt nonetheless. I grabbed her out of the basket and held her in a doorway in case there were aftershocks. Put her in bed w/me and she slept literally touching me all night.

She is 100% fine this a.m. but it's going to be a long summer w/fireworks, earthquakes and all sorts of other scary stuff for her. She's gotten much braver but I don't think she will ever not be fearful of stuff like that...

Shelby wasn't scared of anything so this is ALL new to me. Shelby used to LOVE to watch the fireworks with me... I adore little Jasper and I feel so bad for her when she's scared and I cannot comfort her. I guess I am a real mommy!

Oh my goodness...little Jasper Lily had a rough weekend.  You know I really don't understand why one dog doesn't mind loud noises from fireworks but it scares the beejeezus out of another.  We have neighbors all around us that set off fireworks on July 4th.  Our first dog Lucky would go hide in the shower stall in our bathroom or the bathtub in the hall bathroom.  Leland would tremble and find a corner to curl up in.

Lucian on the other hand doesn't seem to be afraid of ANYTHING!  Heck, we live close to a 30 acre farm (family is related to hubby) and hubby's nephew, wife, and others were over there setting off this explosives stuff that you can buy in sporting goods stores.  It scared the crap out of me every time they set it off but Lucian didn't seem bothered in the least.  We also live pretty close to the Air Guard base and they're all the time of there shooting automatic weapons and firing up these ginormous planes.  I guess Lucian has gotten accustomed to all the loud noises that go on around us...I just wish for peace and quiet.

Anyway, Jasper is just precious as always in her pictures.  I love the black and white of her curled up in the basket.  Sounds like the little girl needs some doggie Xanax...I know I would if I lived around earthquake country...winker.

Awwwww. Poor 'lil Jasper Lily! Note to self .... dont invite JL to visit between June and August ..... thats how long the fireworks last in our 'hood. We hate them too. Lotsa barkin and hiding under desks. Yo! JL! Tell my mama to clean out her closet so we can fit in there! What a grrreat hiding place!

And an earthquake on top of all those explosions! Earthquakes gotta be above a 4.0 for us to freak but yeah, we feel ya. Nothin quite like that rollercoaster feeling when the ground is supposed to be staying still!

Hope you get some quiet time to recover!

Awww poor girl.  She looks petrified in some of those pictures.  I am glad we really don't have earth quakes around in Iowa.  (yes we have had them but guess I am a lucky one not to feel them the very few times we did).  Sassy never liked fireworks either.  I usually put them in my room and turned music & fan on.  Not sure if the girls like them or not last year they were too little to really notice.  Guess they will this year.

Awwww....I feel so sorry for her! It must be so frightening from her perspective and so scary!

And those "scared of everything ears"...I want to come over and throw water on all those darn firecrackers!

Even though you are so scared in these oictures...and that breaks my heart for you.. you still take THE cutest pictures and that ALWAYS make us smile!!..

And then an earthquake in top of that? Poor thing!!

I can only imagine what her "street life" was like with no one like you to comfort her and to love her through it. When you are alone, fear is scarier. So glad she has you...and you have her.

A "stray" took up residence at my house, had puppies. I raised the puppies together with me. She was not afraid of thunderstorms, I was not afraid of thunderstorms. Some pups grew up petrified of thunderstorms, some were not scared at all. BTW, I had the privilege of having the mom and the puppies in my life for many, many happy and lpving years.

JASPER LILY, we love seeing pictures of you and hearing about y our little quirks!

Love!

Ha ha Sahana ... Lucian is just one brave little a'hole (since you call him that all the time and I find that hilarious). But he's a big boy so he's obviously super brave!!! We live about 3 miles from LAX airport and those flights don't seem to bug her but motorcycles, fireworks, cars backfiring... everything sends her running for the hills (or rather under my bed). I definitely have doggy xanax for her for flying and she will be getting that on the 4th of July for sure!

Codie Rae and OP - Jasper DOES love the closet ... she fits nicely in there but I worry she's going to get stuck. Not a fan and not a fan when I cannot find her. Isn't that a cat thing to do? I am surprised she didn't bat an eye at the earthquake but it was a quick jolt - not a roller .. those might cause more concern!

Michelle - Jasper definitely is NOT a fan of anything loud - ever! Last night I swear she heard something that wasn't there and took off under the bed.

Sally - I know ... it breaks my heart when she is scared and I cannot comfort her. Last night she was scared of something that I didn't hear and wouldn't come out ... even for cookies. I wish I had at least known what would trigger it. And I wanted to comfort her, hold her, cover her big ears and tell her it was going to be OK. Maybe we will get to that place where she will seek me out for comfort and realize she no longer has to face the world alone. I do love that she loves her carrier and probably spends parts of her day under my bed ... but she's always tail wagging, body-slamming against the door when I get home! Oh how I wish she could talk ... the tales she would tell......

Awww . . . poor little JL!!! I tell ya, you just never know about them. Harmony, a "gun" dog, was petrified of thunder and living here in tornado alley, there's plenty of that to go around! We finally conditioned her fears and she was okay with all the storms and such.

Now Melody, she was never, ever afraid of thunder, but let the hub-a-dub sneeze and HOLY CRAP ON A SALTINE!!! And let me tell ya, trying to get the hub-a-dub to sneeze on command to recondition her is NOT (I've been told) a reasonable request. So he's tried faking it; nope, didn't work. Then we thought, just don't sneeze so loud; nope, that didn't work either. He's actually held his sneeze to where his ribs hurt, and she still runs for the furthest corner of the house! It really is comical, but sad at the same time. She truly is scared to death!

But why is it that I can sneeze and she looks at me like I've grown antlers out of my head?

Give JL a big ole kiss for me!!!

xoxo

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

You just have me crackin up over here with the whole sneezing dilemma...laughinglaughinglaughing

I must say this is a first for me hearing of a pup scared of a sneeze.  Man hub-a-dub must be one LOUD sneezer!!

LMAO .... "HOLY CRAP ON  A SALTINE" ... I am SOOOOOO using that one! Seriously about spit water on the computer at work! Ha ha!!! Love it!

I'm w/Sahana ... I've never heard of a pup being spooked by a sneeze ... perhaps a large toot but never a sneeze! :-) Poor Melody ...

They are so funny as to what they are afraid of ...  you just have to wonder what goes on in their little brains. Shelby was fearless but she would always walk w/her one side pressed up against a building if we were walking through a city (not just our neighborhood). And Jasper is also afraid of the AC in my car which sucks for her since it does get warm in the summer and I have to blast it.

Ok, I will try this again. The IPad kept eating my replies to this topic last night. Poor, JL. My first thought was oh no , those ears. They are like little megaphones on top of her head. Poor girl! So much noise in one day. Have not found anything that scares Daryl except Lucy when she goes on her run around barking fits. Lucy is not afraid, but goes nuts when I run the vacuum or the Swiffer. Chandler is afraid of clothes baskets and boxes. I do have a humorous story, We have an underground dog fence. Chandler has only ever been on the beep setting. That is enough to send him quivering into the house. He came to me one day, shaking, whining, panting. I honestly thought he was having a heart attack or something. He kept trying to get in my lap, no small feat for an 80 lb dog. I was ready to call the vet for an emergency visit because I was sure he had something very serious wrong. I mean this dog looked next to a seizure. As I went into the hall to pick up the phone, I heard it faintly. The dog fence buzzer was going off continuously. This happens when a wire is broken in the yard. I unplugged it and suddenly my shaking pitiful heap of a dog became completly himself. I guess they are all different. Mine seem to like to be in the room with me during storms, but don't seem real bothered. I sure hope JL has had a quiet couple of days to make up for her trauma this weekend. Scared or not, she is still photogenic. Hugs, Lori, Ty & Gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Poor sweet Daryl! That must have been sooooo scary! And he sure knows who to run to!

He's really gotten big too!

And yeah, Merry Myrtle is like Lucy when it comes to the vacuum cleaner. She'll just go in the other room. N o problem though. My solution? An excuse not to vacuum!

And Chandler scared of boxes? Yet another very unique phobia!!

I WISH Lucian would go into another room when I vacuum.  But oh no we can't have that...Lucian has to attack the vacuum while I'm trying to push it around...whatever.  I get so aggravated sometimes that I'm like either "get those darn huge paws out of my way or they're getting run over!"  Lucian's like the bratty sibling you wish you could send back...lol!

Leland on the other hand always went to another room when the vacuum came on.  Heck he was on the move when he saw me get the thing out of the closet.

It's amazing the differences in personalities!

FYI - we have a very bad little doggy on our hands here.... she's definitely Shelby 2.0

Image Enlarger

Yes, that is an oven mitt and NO she is not supposed to have it. It was on the kitchen counter when I left for work yesterday - on the floor when I got home which means she got from the couch to the ledge to the kitchen counter. This is EXACTLY something I would expect to see Shelby do, which is why I laughed at first. Then I went to kill a spider (and put this on the coffee table) and she went after it again. Bad little Jasper Lily. And you can't really discipline a submissive dog because I feel like it kills her spirit.

And this ... too cute for words! She hates cats, wants to chase them ALL the time and can't be in the same room (most of the time) with a cat ... but she likes to watch them from afar. A staring contest between her and our neighbor's cat. They love to do this! (look for the kitty in the window to the left).
