We had the best time! While it wasn't the 'aha moment' I was looking for, we had a great time. Couple things though; Jasper hates LONG car rides. HATES!!! She would hunker down in the backseat and act petrified... for a dog that had to spend 8+ hours a day in a car for 2 days .. .that was a rough life for her. But she slept really well at night.
We went from LAX to Redding, CA to Portland, to our haven (and Shelby's resting spot), Cannon Beach, back down the 101 HWY through the Redwoods to Oakland to meet up with Karen and Martha (slightly altered due to Jasper's mom's inability to do a proper Google search) back to LA. It was long, exhausting, peaceful, relaxing and FUN! We got SO many great photos and this dog was MEANT to live at the beach, in nature, in the forest ... We did have some 'cranky-pants' episodes w/some barky-ness but I figured that was her being tired and hot.
I'll put our photos on a shutterfly thingy so anyone who really cares and wants to see them and isn't on FB can take a looksie...
But what I thought - more than once on this trip - was how much I did miss my Shelby girl but how she really did send me a GREAT dog that allows me to live my life and my dreams of traveling with a canine companion. There were times on the trip when it was just me and Jasper, it was a bit lonely but I was never truly sad. I had our angel watching over us.
Oh and the best part ... one of the HUGE highlights was we got a LONG leash (over 30 feet) and Jasper ran zoomies .. yes zoomies on the beach!!! I was SO proud of her! She embraced it like her angel sister. And shortly after that .. we found a dollar bill on the beach and as Bonnie pointed out to me - that's 100 pennnies! Shelby was smiling and proud!
Shelby did great ... I always knew she was the stronger one in our relationship but I truly believe with every bit of my heart and soul that she hand-picked Jasper for me and made me work that love and work for our relationship. Jasper and I have a very different bond and there are times I do think, God... Shelby would never have been such a pill about being in the car and I remember ... life isn't w/out challenge and Shelby didn't want me to take the easy road. So she makes me work to earn all the love that I get from little Jasper.
It's taken over a year but the amount of love and affection I have for Jasper is over-whelming and I feel SO blessed to have her. Thank you Shelby Lynne... you always were the wise one !!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I had no idea .... wow... what the life Jerry had! What a lucky dog! No wonder he loved hitting the road with you all. I didn't appreciate the Redwoods or nature the last time I went through (about 20 years ago) but I think with my 'older' years ... I am definitely all about embracing nature. I loved being "one with nature".

Oh Alison, this just warms my heart in so many ways. I'm so happy for ALL the revelations Jasper and Shelby have given you.
I love how you jave grown to understand Jasper Lily so well, and she you. A huge part of what got you to this point was your trust in Shelby Lynne and her "choice" for you!
You jave really opened my eyes on how to have a vacation with our dogs. My first "venture" along these lines was the Tripawds Pawty in Virginia. Frankie and Merry Myrtle were so tuckered out every night in our hotel room they would settle in instantly and go right ti sleep! They adapted to being in a strange hotel room as though they had done it a million times before. We are a family...we were together...and we were on vacation! Thank you for bringing that I to my consciousness! Only problem is I need to bring Elizabeth's Eric and Bonnie's John with me to help with the leash walking! "Walking" the two of them together is a dangerous sport for their human!
For Jaaper to handle eight hours at a time in the car...WOW!! Pretty rough for a little nature girl!! And to read you were O E WITH NATURE....OMD!!! Miracles never cease!
The second picture of you and Jasler Lily at the Rose Garden...one of my favorites because she is SMILING!! Her eyes are so full of joy! And then the bottom two...with those EARS!!!! Love this dog!!! It nust lights up my world knowing how happy you both are together!

Thank you Sally!!!! You are always such a ray of eternal light and sunshine ... yes, dogs are the BEST travel companions ... they don't complain about what you want to see or do (well Jasper hated the car but she did 'suck it up and deal')... they usually smile pretty for photos and all around good time. I love traveling solo. It is the best also made better w/a dog.
I have been back at work 2 days and I can truly say I miss that little dog and I am eager and excited to get home to be with her. She brings me so much joy and that joy is back in my life. Well done, Shelby girl ... well done!

It was really great to meet both Alison and Jasper! Miss Jasper was quite a well behaved lady when we met at my house for lunch.
But one thing I should know by now... don't wear a black shirt when there are black pug photo ops!!!

Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

I'm so glad that you both had a great trip!! I'm so happy that Jasper has blossomed into a fan of the great outdoors. There's always so much to see and smell!! And like Jasper I'm not a big fan of LONG car rides...so Jasper I completely understand the crankies!

Thank you all!!!! Jasper and I are settling back into our 'normal' routine which means back to longer work hours and less time for play. 🙁 I swear to DOG, LA emotionally slays me daily. Thank DOG for little Jasper Lily (thank you Shelby Lynne for sending her to me). I know that Shelby sent her to help me heal... I think, often, when we are out walking that while we are pretty bonded, we are still kind of like 2 lost souls, hanging on to each other for dear life. Shelby is and will always be the love of my life and my first 'heart' dog... Jasper is quickly earning her spot in my heart and I feel like our bond will be very strong too as the years go by .. I learned SO much from Shelby and grew with her that I kind of expect that I'll have that relationship with Jasper as she ages ...
But wow... we have worked SO hard to overcome her issues and they say a picture says it all... look at this: Could that dog BE anymore zen on the beach? A year ago - terrified, HUGE ears, bug eyes ... this summer... cheezy joker grin and relaxed ears and looking like she's stoned and content ... so proud of her. Now it is time to work on ME!
