For a non-barking dog, she has really found her voice ... thankfully it's always outside (except at 6:00 a.m. today when the alarm went off - which she has never done but I guess I wasn't moving fast enough for her). This was Jasper yesterday at the dog bark. FOR no apparent reason. I can only assume it's akin to her telling "your mama jokes".... Or "look at me, I'm a bad a$$ ... you just don't realize it since when you charge me, I roll on my back and cry like a baby". No one was listening to her - seriously.

Shelby NEVER barked... in the 13+ years she lived with me, she barked maybe once or twice but always spooked herself! Jasper has definitely found her voice and I am so thankful, for the most part, she only uses it outside!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Jasper!!! You are a cutie!! I think she wanted everyone in that park to pay attention to her....hehe. I don't blame her, she knows she's cute.

She's cute! That's for sure!

And the other super funny thing she did yesterday .... you know how kids (I don't have any of my own but I've seen friend's kids do this)... do the "potty dance" when they don't want to stop playing in order to go potty? They grab their pants, etc...

Well Jasper refused to poop at the dog park. I knew she had to poop (and she always poops there) but she was so excited to play that she wouldn't stop and do her business but instead would sit and scooch her butt. After an hour of play time, we left and went for a quick walk and BOOM - poop!

Kids!

I think the " non-barking" thing has ceased to exist, now that little Jasper is secure in her environment.....adding to what Sally has already said, her wings have sprouted awhile ago, and her true "Jasperness" is making itself more and more obvious.....I think it is adorable !! The poop thing is so funny, too !!

Much Love,

Jasper scared the daylights out of me today. I had her outside (on her leash) and I put the leash down for ONE second to put the trash and in the can and she saw a cat and boom - she was off. I was screaming her name and running her in three in boot heels! She dashed through yards, and I could hear her but couldn't see her. I begged her to come back and told her she was a good girl (but I am sure she heard the fear in my voice). She looped around the backside of some apts and back through our carport and I thought she ran up the stairs but nope -she was still loose. FINALLY (after what felt like an eternity) I saw her in the courtyard running for my neighbors door which would basically trap her. I ran down the stairs and slowly walked to her and she cowered (submissive) and tinkled. I grabbed her close and hugged her and kissed her and told her I loved her and I wasn't mad.

Never again. That dog will never be w/out me holding that leash. I am so thankful she decided to come 'home'... Flipping cats!!! :-)

I don't know what snapped in her mind to get her to turn around and come back but I am sure thankful she knows where her home is and how much she is indeed loved there ... she has definitely come out of her shell and we are seeing the "real Jasper Lily"...

Oh Lordy that would have scared the living daylights out of me!!! I'm so, so glad you were able to recover her. One of the sickest feelings in the world is to lose your fur-baby. We lost Harmony once (and we live out in the country). It took us nearly 3 days to find her. I was absolutely broken-hearted. Thankfully you were able to get Jasper back fairly quick, whew!!!

My heart's about to pump out of my chest!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

THREE days!?!? OMG ... I would have lost it. We have a lot of coyotes where we live (even though we're in the city) but I am sure if they saw Jasper alone, she would be a meal to them.

I was (and honestly, I've been a bit off all day) so shook up. I literally thought I had / was going to lose her for good or she would get hit by a car or worse... I wish I could shake this feeling since I know she is 100% safe and in my apt.

Ironically, we're going to deliver holiday treats today when I get off work to all of Shelby's vets and I wanted to bring Jasper to round out the year ... all I could think this a.m. was if she gets hit by a car, that is so not how I wanted her to meet the ER vets that Shelby knew all too well.

I love how JL is showing you her Jasperness in all its glory...great video.

And YIKES...I would have been scared to pieces, too, with the leash slipping out. It can happen sooooo fast. Lexie was a major escape artist back in her day, and losing your dog is the worst feeling in the world. I double leashed her and used a waist walking belt plus a regular leash in her younger, wilder days.

I'm so glad you got Jasper Lily back!

Btw, the blog that you wrote about Shelby and the pics you posted made me tear up.

I know that all of us who are spending our first Christmas without our precious Tripawds are having a tough time. Your post captured my mixed emotions so well. Thanks for sharing.

Love and hugs,

Deb and Angel Lexie

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

I think we are going to invest in something like that. So I'll have a double-system. Shelby was a master escape artist back in the day (her early days) but I don't think she was as fast - ever - as Jasper. Jasper and I are going hiking this week w/a friend to an off-leash canyon and Jasper will definitely be tethered to me in many ways! Too many chances for her to bolt with all the smells, critters, etc!

Even on our walks when she is leashed - she is so intent and focused - on a hunting expedition and since yesterday, she is still focused on finding that darn cat!

Thank you, Deb, for your kind words on Shelby's blog! She did have the most amazing and fun life with me... I am glad she was able to bring some joy to your holiday!!!

Much love!

Hmmmmmm.....sounds to me like "someone" who really loves their dog.....and a "someone" who really loves their human!!!

And YAAAAAAAAAY to you for NOT scolding her when she came back and giving her nothing but lraise and love!!! I've found they will absolute l y c k me back when they see how excited and happy y ou a r e to see them! So many leople still get angry and fuss at their dog when they f j nally get them back.....huge mistake!

Because I love in a fairly rural area I can go out with Merry zmyrtle with no leash and she stays with me. Every now and then though she'll get on the trail of something more interesting than wandering around with me and gets a little hard headed about coming to me. One thing that works really well...in additi i n to saying SUPPER or. COOKIE...or LATTE' is tonise a visual with my arms. HUH?

Okay, when I feed her I have her sit first and look at me....I hold my arms up to the sky...and drop them quickly and say "Good girl! Supper!!!!" That's her cue to eat! Sooooo....if she's wandering off....as long as I can get her to look towards me....I raise my arms up to the sky to the sky, drop them excitedly and say supper!!!.....And...knocking on wood....she comes running!!! And I ALWAYS take her in and give her a treat! Anyway.....attaching a visual to a treat reward may help if she goes "cat crazy"......or maybe just hold a cat up to the sky!!clown
